आज मुझे अंग्रेजी कवि आगा शाहिद अली की पंक्तियाँ याद आ रही हैं. उसका सीधे-सीधे अनुवाद न सही भावानुवाद प्रस्तुत कर रहा हूँ- वे मुझसे शाहिद का मतलब पूछ रहे हैं/ मेरे दोस्त फ़ारसी में उसका मतलब होता है महबूब और अरबी में गवाह.
मारियो वर्गास ल्योसा को नोबेल पुरस्कार मिलने पर पोस्ट लिखा. सबसे पहले हम सबके प्रिय कथाकार उदयप्रकाश जी ने सहज जिज्ञासा प्रकट की कि ल्योसा का उच्चारण हो सकता है कि इयोसा होता हो. मुझे ध्यान आया कि २००२ के आसपास अशोक वाजपेयी ने ल्योसा की एक किताब ‘लेटर्स टू ए यंग नावलिस्ट’ पर लिखा था जिसमें उसका नाम ल्योसा लिखा था. कह नहीं सकता हो सकता है मैंने वहीं से ल्योसा लिखना सीखा हो.
उदयप्रकाश जी ने मन के अंदर जिज्ञासा जगा दी तो मैंने सबसे पहले अपनी पत्नी का ध्यान किया. वह स्पैनिश भाषी है और पेरू दूतावास में काम करती है. लेकिन ज़ाहिर है हम लोग आपस में लेखकों के नाम के उच्चारण पर बात नहीं करते हैं. दिल्ली में नहीं होने के कारण वह इस संबंध में मेरी इतनी ही मदद कर पाई कि पेरू में उनको ल्योसा ही बोला जाता है. उसने बताया कि स्पैनिश भाषा की वर्णमाला में ll एक अक्षर होता है जिसका उच्चारण स्पेन में तो ल्य होता है लेकिन लैटिन अमेरिकी देशों में उसे ज्य बोलते हैं. अब फिर मन में खटका बैठा कि पेरू तो लैटिन अमेरिका का देश है फिर वहाँ ल्य क्यों, ज्य क्यों नहीं. इस बीच एक मित्र मनीष चौहान ने यह लिखा कि दो एल का उच्चारण ल ही होता है. उनके किसी मित्र का कहना है. मुझे ध्यान आया कि मेरे विद्वान मित्र गिरिराज किराडू ने भी एक बार किसी और सन्दर्भ में कहा था कि उसके नाम के उच्चारण लोसा ही होता है.
और दिन की ही तरह बात आई गई हो गई होती. लेकिन आज दिन खास था. इतने सारे लोगों के प्रिय लेखक को साहित्य का सबसे बड़ा पुरस्कार मिला था. सब उसे सही नाम से पुकारकर उसे अपने कुछ और करीब देखना चाहते थे. सुनते हैं कि कोलंबिया सहित लैटिन अमेरिका के कई देशों में लोग मार्केज़ को ऐसे गाबो बुलाते हैं जैसे वह उनकी गली में ही पला-बढ़ा हो.
मन में जिज्ञासा बनी रही. आखिर सही नाम क्या है. याद आया बरसों मार्केज़ के नाम को लेकर भी यही उहापोह बना रहा. पहली बार जब अपने अग्रज-मित्र रविकांत के कमरे में मैंने ‘एक उपन्यास देखा था ‘लव इन द टाइम ऑफ कॉलरा’ तो उसके लेखक का नाम पढ़ा था मार्कुएज़ क्योंकि अंग्रेजी में उनका नाम लिखा जाता है marquez. इसका सहज उच्चारण तब यही लगा था. मारे संकोच के किसी से पूछ नहीं पाया. एक बार उनका कहीं अनुवाद पढ़ा तो नाम लिखा था मार्केस, फिर काफी दिन तक उनका वही नाम याद करता रहा. फिर मैंने पाया कि नहीं हिंदी के बहुसंख्य विद्वान तो उस कोलंबियाई लेखक का नाम मार्खेज़ लिखते हैं. मैंने भी यही नाम जगह-जगह लिखा. तब नया-नया लिखना सीखा था. खूब लिखा. वह तो भला हो सोन्या सुरभि गुप्ता का जिसने वन हंड्रेड इयर्स ऑफ सालिट्यूड का मूल स्पैनिश भाषा से अनुवाद किया, जिसमें लेखक का नाम लिखा मार्केज़. तब से कम से कम मैं तो वही नाम चलाता हूँ.
बात ल्योसा नाम की हो रही थी. पत्नी के सौजन्य से तब मैंने पेरू के लेखक-राजनयिक कार्लोस इरिगोवन से बात की. वे इन दिनों पेरू के दूतावास में मंत्री हैं. उनको नामों को लेकर अपनी समस्या बताई. उन्होंने हँसते हुए बताया कि होता तो ल्योसा है लेकिन बोलने में अगर सावधानी से नहीं बोला जाए तो योसा भी हो जाता है. मुझे उदयप्रकाश जी याद आ गए. उन्होंने भी कुछ ऐसा ही कहा था.
जिज्ञासा शांत हो रही थी कि कार्लोस इरिगोवन ने एक बात कही जिसका संबंध ल्योसा के नाम से भी है. उन्होंने कहा, ल्योसा दरअसल पेरू के पहले विश्व-नागरिक हैं. उनको जितना पढ़ा जाता है उतना कम ही लैटिन अमेरिकी लेखकों को पढ़ा जाता है. उनकी व्याप्ति हर कहीं है. इसीलिए सब उनके ही नाम हैं- य्योसा, योसा, ल्योसा. लोसा सब. जिस देश, जिस भाषा के पाठकों-लेखकों को जो नाम अच्छा लगता है वे उसे उस नाम से बुलाते हैं. लेखक के सबसे करीबी तो उसके पाठक ही होते हैं. जो उसके रहस्यों को समझने लगते हैं. इसलिए लेखक पर पाठकों का हक होता है. वे चाहे जिस नाम से बुलाएं.
मैंने आज हिंदी अलग-अलग अखबारों में उनके अलग-अलग नाम पढ़े. लेकिन सबमें बात वही थी कि मारियो वर्गास ल्योसा को साहित्य का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिल गया है. अक्तावियो पाज के बाद करीब २० सालों बाद यह पुरस्कार किसी लैटिन अमेरिकी लेखक को मिला है. कि हो सकता है पढ़े जाने के लिहाज से मार्केज़ पहले लैटिन अमेरिकी ग्लोबल लेखक ठहरते हों लेकिन प्रभाव की दृष्टि ल्योसा ही बीस ठहरते हैं.
वह ल्योसा जो अब पेरू कम ही जाता है लेकिन उसको पुरस्कार मिलने से उसके मातृदेश में राष्ट्रीय पर्व जैसा माहौल है, भारत में जहां उसके आने की चर्चा बरसों से है लेकिन आने की बस उम्मीद, उसके पुरस्कार का उल्लास कम से कम बौद्धिक हलकों में तो दिखाई ही दे रहा है. वे बहुपठित लेखक हैं.
जिज्ञासा तो शांत हो गई लेकिन एक सवाल छोड़ गई है मन में कहीं- क्या लेखक का नाम महत्वपूर्ण होता है या उसका काम.
यह लेख हमारे समय के सबसे बड़े लेखक उदयप्रकाश जी को समर्पित है, जिनकी प्रेरणा से मैंने यह लिखा.
