आज 21 जुलाई को जन्मदिन है अर्नेस्ट हेमिंग्वे का. नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता अमेरिकी लेखक अर्नेस्ट हेमिंग्वे ने दुनिया भर की भाषाओं के लेखकों को प्रभावित किया. न कहकर कहने की उनकी शैली में कहानियों के रहस्य दो पंक्तियों के बीच छिपे होते थे जिसे आलोचकों ने ‘हिडेन फैक्ट’ की तकनीक के नाम से जाना. वह मितकथन का लेखक था. मानीखेज़ चुप्पियों के इस अप्रतिम लेखक की एक छोटी सी कहानी यहाँ प्रस्तुत है जिसमें उनकी यह तकनीक देखी-पहचानी जा सकती है- जानकी पुल.

एक लेखिका लिखती है
अपने शयन कक्ष में मेज़ पर अखबार खोले बैठी वह खिडकी से बाहर बर्फबारी देख रही थी. बर्फ छत पर गिरती थी पिघल जाती थी. उसने बाहर देखना बंद किया और यह खत लिखने बैठ गई. आराम-आराम से जिससे न कुछ काटना पड़े न ही दोबारा लिखना पड़े.

प्रिय डॉक्टर,
क्या मैं पत्र के माध्यम से आपसे कुछ बहुत ज़रूरी मशविरा ले सकती हूँ- मुझे एक फैसला लेना है, पर समझ नही पा रही हूँ किस पर भरोसा करूं, अपने माँ-पापा से पूछने का साहस नहीं कर पायी इसलिए आपको लिख रही हूँ, वह भी इसलिए क्योंकि मैं आपसे मिलने की ज़रूरत नही समझती. क्या तब भी मैं आप पर भरोसा कर सकती हूँ. बात यह है कि मैंने अमेरिकी सेना में काम करनेवाले एक आदमी से १९२९ में शादी की और उसी साल उसे चीन भेज दिया गया- शंघाई- वहाँ वह तीन साल रहा- फिर घर आया- कुछ महीने पहले उसे सेना की सेवा से मुक्त कर दिया गया और वह हेलेना, अरकंसास में अपनी माँ के घर चला गया. फिर उसने मुझे खत लिखकर घर बुलाया, मैं गई, मैंने पाया कि उसे नियमित रूप से सुइयां दी जा रही थीं, स्वाभाविक है कि मैंने पूछा तो पता चला, मैं कैसे कहूँ, उसे सिफलिस हो गया था और उसी का इलाज़ चल रहा है- आप समझ गए न मैं क्या कह रही हूँ- अब आप मुझे बताइए, उसके साथ फिर से रहना क्या सुरक्षित रहेगा. जबसे वह चीन से आया है मैं उसके नज़दीक भी नहीं गई हूँ. वह मुझे भरोसा दिलाता रहता है कि इस डॉक्टर के इलाज़ से वह ठीक हो जाएगा- क्या आपको ऐसा लगता है- मुझे याद है, मेरे पिता कहते थे अगर कोई इस बीमारी की चपेट में आ जाए तो उसे यही कामना करनी चाहिए कि उसकी जल्दी मौत हो जाए- मैं अपने पिता का तो भरोसा करती हूँ लेकिन अपने पति पर सबसे अधिक विश्वास करना चाहती हूँ. प्लीज़, प्लीज़ मुझे बताइए क्या करना चाहिए- जब वह चीन में था उस दौरान हमारी एक बेटी पैदा हुई थी.

हो सकता है वह मुझे इस बारे में कुछ बताए कि क्या करना उचित होगा, उसने अपने आप से कहा. हो सकता है वह मुझे कुछ सुझाए. अखबार में छपी तस्वीर को देखकर तो लगता है कि वह जानकार है. देखने में तो स्मार्ट लगता है. रोज़-रोज़ वह सबको बताता रहता है, क्या करना चाहिए. उसे ज़रूर पता होना चाहिए. मैं वही करना चाहती हूँ जो सही हो. वैसे काफी समय बीत चुका है. समय काफी हो गया है. बहुत समय से यह सब चल रहा है. हे ईश्वर, बहुत समय हो चुका है. उसे तो वहीं जाना होगा जहाँ वे उसे भेजेंगे, मैं जानती हूँ, लेकिन मैं यह नहीं जानती कि उसने क्या किया कि उसके साथ यह हुआ, मैं तो ईश्वर से यही मनाती हूँ कि उसे यह सब नहीं हुआ होता. मुझे इसकी परवाह नहीं है कि उसने ऐसा क्या किया कि उसे यह बीमारी हुई. बल्कि मैं तो ईश्वर से मनाती हूँ कि उसके साथ यह सब कभी नहीं हुआ होता. ऐसा लगता तो नहीं है कि उसको यह नहीं होना चाहिए था. मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा है कि क्या करना चाहिए. मैं तो ईश्वर से यही प्रार्थना करती हूँ कि काश उसे किसी तरह की बीमारी नहीं हुई होती.
मुझे नहीं पता क्यों उसे यह बीमारी होनी चाहिए थी.
