सुबह ‘जानकी पुल’ पर कमलेश की कविताएं लगाते हुए हमने बहस आमंत्रित की थी. वरिष्ठ कवि-आलोचक विष्णु खरे ने बहस की शुरुआत करते हुए यह चिट्ठी लिखी है. आपके लिए- मॉडरेटर.

कमलेश की इन कविताओं को ब्लॉग पर लगाना एक ज़रूरी और उपयोगी काम था लेकिन अधूरा, लिहाज़ा कुछ असंतोषजनक,इसलिए कि पाठक जानना चाहता है कि यह कहाँ से ली गयी हैं और कब छपी थीं.क्या यह उनकी ताज़ा रचनाएँ हैं या किसी नए संग्रह में संकलित नई-पुरानी हैं ?
बहरहाल,यह पत्र-लेखक कमलेश को पिछले चालीस बरस से ज़्यादा से जानता है और 1969 से श्रीकांत वर्मा की मृत्यु तक तो उनसे लगभग घनिष्ठता थी.कमलेश ने 1970 के दशक की शुरूआत में एक बहुत भयानक सस्ते अखबारी काग़ज़ पर लगभग टैब्लोइड साइज़ की एक पत्रिका ‘फ़र्क़’ निकाली थी जिसके प्रवेशांक में लिखनेवालों में केदारनाथ सिंह अपनी कविता ‘फ़र्क़ पड़ता है’ के साथ थे,श्रीकांतजी ने शायद कोई राजनीतिक टिप्पणी लिखी थी,निर्मल वर्मा भी थे और ख़ाक़सार ने हिंदी-पत्रिकाओं,विशेषतः ‘दिनमान’ की जलेबी, गद्य-शैली पर हल्ला बोला था क्योंकि इस प्रवेशांक का विषय ‘गद्य का पतन’ ही था.इस पर्चे की प्लैनिंग के लिए हम लोगों की नियमित बैठकें जॉर्ज फर्नांडिस के,जिन्हें मैंने कभी नहीं देखा, साउथ एवेन्यू स्थित एम.पी. फ्लैट की विपन्न बरसाती में हुआ करती थीं.श्रीकांतजी पास ही मिनीमाता के वैसे ही फ्लैट की वैसी ही बरसाती से सक्रिय थे.बाद में तो,खैर,कमलेश ने साप्ताहिक निकाले,प्रकाशन भी किया.
कुछ महीनों बाद अशोक वाजपेयी द्वारा संपादित-प्रकाशित ऐतिहासिक काव्य-पुस्तिका सीरीज़ में,जिसका संदिग्ध श्रीगणेश ख़ाक़सार की ‘बीस कविताएँ’ से हुआ,कमलेश की वैसी ही पुस्तिका ‘जरत्कारु और अन्य कविताएँ’ प्रकाशित हुई और हिंदी साहित्य का परिचय एक अलग ही ढंग के चौंकानेवाले उम्दा कवि से हुआ.फिर इमर्जेन्सी में कमलेश शायद अंडरग्राउंड हो गए – यदि उन सरीखा लहीम-शहीम आदमी-कम-देओ-ज़्यादा शख्स अंडरग्राउंड हो सकता हो तो. जब केंद्र में मिली-जुली सरकार आई तो समाजवादी मित्र-मंत्री पुरुषोत्तम कौशिक के सौजन्य से कमलेश को दिल्ली की पॉशेस्ट कॉलोनियों की सबसे महंगे किराये की कोठियों में रोज़ दोनों टाइम सीधे अशोक-आदि होटलों से आया भोजन और दुनिया भर की नायाबतरीन वारुणियाँ खिलाते-पिलाते पाया जा सकता था.शरद पवार की पार्टी के महामंत्री-राज्यसभा-सदस्य डी पी त्रिपाठी ने अलबत्ता कमलेश सरीखी कुछ फ़ितरतें पाई हैं.
वह हिंदी के सर्वाधिक अ-नैतिक और बोहेमियन व्यक्ति हैं.नफ़ीस और मुहज़्ज़ब इतने कि उनके घर ‘अज्ञेय’ पानी भरें लेकिन ऐसा भी होता था कि जेब में धेला नहीं है मगर दिन भर टैक्सियों में घूम रहे हैं.उन्हें आज अम्बानी के साथ रिलायंस की सबसे महँगी गाड़ी में और कल हाजी अली के सामने खैरात माँगते देखा जा सकता है.कभी-कभी उनके दुश्मन उन पर ठगी के झूठे-सच्चे आरोप भी लगा दिया करते थे.श्रीकांतजी कांग्रेसी थे और कमलेश लोहियाइट लेकिन दोनों घनिष्ठ थे और श्रीकांत हमेशा कमलेश के बीसियों क़िस्से निष्लुष हँसते हुए सुनाते अघाते न थे.विजय मोहन सिंह के पास भी बताने को बहुत-कुछ निकल आएगा.कमलेश के जीवन पर एक उपन्यास लिखा जा सकता है,एक ‘हाइस्ट’ फिल्म बनाई जा सकती है.श्रीकांतजी की मृत्यु के बाद मेरा ही नहीं,कई लोगों का संपर्क कमलेश से टूट गया,सिर्फ यह कि वे कभी-कभार मुझ सरीखे ‘रेगुलर’ को अमेरिकन लाइब्रेरी में ‘कांग्रेसनल प्रोसीडिंग्स’ सरीखे अजीबोग़रीब ग्रंथों का रहस्यमय अध्ययन करते दीख जाते थे.
कमलेश से बात करना लगभग असंभव है.वह ठंढ की रात में किसी पुल पर खड़े हुए पुराने कोयले के रेल इंजन की तरह सीत्कारों,फूत्कारों,बीच-बीच में नन्हीं सीटियों,और चल पड़ने का भ्रम देते हुए ‘वार्तालाप’ करते हैं.इस बीच वह लगातार अपने खुले हुए बाएँ हाथ को एक अजीब नौसेना सैल्यूट में अपनी बाईं कनपटी तक ले जाते रहते हैं.
वह और अशोक दोनों किताबें खरीदते बहुत हैं,उन्हें पढ़ बहुत कम पाते हैं और समझ शायद उससे भी कम,लेकिन इन और पिछली कविताओं की शहादत बहुत साफ़ है कि कमलेश अशोक और उनके खेमे के सभी ‘कवियों’ से बेहतर लिखते हैं और आज के अन्य कई अधेड़ और युवा कवियों से भी.यहाँ प्रस्तुत कविताओं के कुछ,यद्यपि बहुत कम, अंशों से बहस हो सकती है,उन्हें ख़ारिज नहीं किया जा सकता.सिद्ध किया जाए कि सर्जनात्मक स्तर पर उनकी कौन सी कविताएँ किस गुप्तचर एजेंसी से प्रभावित या फंडेड हैं.कमलेश यदि सी आइ ए के एजेंट भी निकलें तो उससे कविता के बाहर नैतिक,राजनीतिक,सार्वजनिक और कानूनी तौर पर निपटा जाना चाहिए.यह भी स्पष्ट कर दिया जाना चाहिए कि यदि कमलेश महाकवि भी घोषित कर दिए जाएँ तो भी उनके हवाले से सी आइ ए सरीखी विश्व-षड्यंत्री,मूलतः नग्नतम पूँजीवाद-रक्षक,हत्यारी और फ़ाशिस्ट चरित्र वाली संस्था का कोई बचाव, सराहना या समर्थन नहीं किए जा सकते.इसका मतलब यह भी नहीं कि नात्सी जर्मनी,सोविएत रूस और अन्य समकालीन भगिनी-संस्थाओं को क्षमा किया जा सकता है.
समानधर्मा ईर्ष्या में मैं वर्षों से यह सोचकर खल-सुख प्राप्त कर रहा था कि कमलेश जैसे असाधारण कवि को भुला दिया गया है.हिन्दी की यह हुडुकलुल्लू भंते-पीढ़ी,जो पिछले चालीस-पचास साल के रंगारंग साहित्यिक इतिहास को लेकर सिलपट है, अपने जाहिल,आत्मपावन राजनीतिक जोश में उन्हें अनायास हिंदी रेआलपोलिटीक के केंद्र में ले आई वर्ना उस दईमारे सत्तर पेज के सामासिक इंटरव्यू को देख कौन मतिमंद रहा था !
अब कमलेश के नए संग्रह पढ़ने के सिवा कोई चारा ही नहीं है.दूसरे भी पढ़ें.
