13 सितम्बर को दिवंगत कवि भगवत रावत की जयंती थी. जीवन की आपाधापी में हम इतने उलझ गए हैं कि सही समय पर हम अपने वरिष्ठों को याद भी नहीं कर पाते. बहरहाल, आज उनकी स्मृति को प्रणाम करते हुए उनके एक पुराने साक्षात्कार का सम्पादित रूप दे रहे हैं जो नरेश चन्द्रकर ने लिया था- जानकी पुल.

प्रश्न- आप इन दिनों गम्भीर रूप से अस्वस्थ हैं। अपने शारीरिक कष्टों से तटस्थ रहने की ताकत कहाँ से मिलती है?कविता सँभालती है या आप कविता को?
मेरा अपना अनुभव यह है कि जब-जब मुझे शारीरिक व्याधियों ने सताया, उन्हें सहन करने की ताकत भी कहीं उन व्याधियों में ही छिपी मिली। दरअसल तकलीफों से भागा तो जा नहीं सकता, तो सिर्फ़ एक ही रास्ता बचता है कि उनसे दोस्ती कर ली जाए। उनमें ही से ऐसे कुछ रास्ते या जगहें निकल आती हैं जो आपको जीने का वक्त मुहैया कराती रहती हैं। शारीरिक या मानसिक किसी तरह के कष्टों से कोई भी तटस्थ नहीं रह सकता। सिद्ध योगियों की तरह के लोग रह लेते होंगे। मनुष्य तो तटस्थ रह नहीं सकता। तो सिर्फ़ यही रास्ता बचता है कि उस तकलीफ के साथ जीना सीख लिया जाए। ऐसे में कविता आपके जीने का मनोबल बढ़ाती हैं। आपको लगता रहता है कि आप निरर्थक नहीं हुए हैं। आपका जीवन निरर्थक नहीं हुआ है। इस अर्थ में कविता मुझे बहुत बल देती है। मैं कविता को कितना क्या दे पाता हूँ, पता नहीं। वैसे भी आग,हवा,पानी,नदी,तालाब,पेड़-पौधों से आप लेते ही लेते हैं- उन्हें देते क्या हैं। कविता इसी तरह है।
प्रश्न- आज आप सत्तर के करीब हैं। प्रत्येक कवि किसी समय में अपनी कलम से जोर और जादू पैदा करता है। आपके जीवन में वह समय कब था? कुछ याद करेंगे?
मुझे नहीं पता कि मेरी कलम ने कब जोर और जादू पैदा किया या किसी भी कि नहीं। पता होगा तो पाठकों को होगा। पर मैं जोर और जादू जैसी कविता के लिए उपयोग की जाने वाली शब्दावली से सहमत हूँ और न अवधारणा से। कविता कोई चमत्कार पैदा करने के लिए नहीं लिखता- कम से कम मैं तो कतई नहीं। जो ऐसा करते भी हैं वे कुछ दिन आतिशबाजी करके रह जाते हैं। कविता न तो कोई उत्सव है,न जीवन का विलाप। वह तो जीवन के साथ-साथ चलती रहने वाली, उसके संघर्ष में साथ-साथ नदी के प्रवाह की तरह सतत बहने वाली चीज़ है। उसकी निरन्तरता में ही उसकी सार्थकता है। सो पिछले पचास से अधिक वर्षों से जिस तरह लिखता रहा, उसी तरह आज तक लिख रहा हूँ। यह खुली हुई किताब की तरह सबके सामने है। इन वर्षों में कब मेरी कविता ने पाठकों को लुभाया ये तो वही जानते हैं। मैं इतना भर जानता हूँ कि मेरे पाठक बहुत हैं- इतने कि मैंने कल्पना नहीं की थी। मैं उन कवियों की तरह नहीं हूँ जो इने-गिने आलोचकों के लिए लिखते हैं और सौ-डेढ़ सौ तथाकथित बौद्धिकों के बीच ऊपर-नीचे होते रहते हैं। समकालीन कविता की इस तरह की प्रायोजित दौड़ में मैंने कभी हिस्सा ही नहीं लिया। शायद यही कारण है कि अब इस उम्र तक आते-आते मुझे महत्त्वपूर्ण कवि तो माना जा रहा है पर कहा यह जा रहा है कि मैं मुख्यधारा से बाहर का हूँ। ये वही लोग कह रहे हैं जो अब मुझ पर कुछ कहने को विवश हुए हैं। पर मुख्यधारा का अर्थ क्या है- यह कोई बताता नहीं। न तो उसके मानकों का पता है, न जीवन-दृष्टि और मूल्यों का। कोई कहीं भी रहकर यदि अपने समय की विसंगतियों, जटिलताओं और विरोधाभासों को पहचान रहा है और उनसे गुज़रते हुए मनुष्य की जिजीविषा और उसके संघर्ष के अनुभवों को अपनी कविता में चरितार्थ कर रहा है तो वह कौन-सी बोली-बानी बोलता है, कौन-सी भाषा का प्रयोग कर रहा है- इससे क्या फ़र्क पड़ता है- अगर वह सच्चे अर्थों में कविता की सभी शर्तों के साथ लोगों तक पहुँच रहा है। क्या इतना काफी नहीं है। फिर वह मुख्यधारा और गौणधारा क्या होती है।
साहित्य में इस तरह के विभाजन न सिर्फ़ घातक है, उसको सम्पूर्णता में न देखने की एक नकली बौद्धिक परिकल्पना है। जो राजनेता अपने ही स्वार्थ में डूबे हुए केवल सत्ता की राजनीति करते हैं- क्या आप उन्हें ही सामाजिक संघर्ष की मुख्यधारा में मानेंगे?और मेधा पाटकर और अरुन्धती राय जैसी प्रतिभा सम्पन्न, साहसी और निर्भीक लोगों के सामाजिक संघर्ष को गौणधारा में डाल देंगे। क्योंकि वे ज़्यादातर समाचार पत्रों की हेडलाइन नहीं बनतीं। क्योंकि वे देश के कोनों-अँतरों में चुपचाप अपना काम करती हैं। अफसोस तो ये है कि इस शब्दावली का प्रयोग ज़्यादातर हमारे वामपंथी आलोचक करते हैं- और कोई उनसे पूछता नहीं कि वर्गीकरण का यह विचार किस अर्थ में वामपंथी दृष्टि का परिचय देता है।
प्रश्न- आपसे जब भी मुलाकात की, आपमें आत्मग्रस्तता नहीं दिखी। कुछ शिकायतें दिखीं,पर आत्म-संयम जबरदस्त लगा। जीवन की पाठशाला की ये सिखावनें कहाँ प्राप्त हुईं?कुछ बताएँ।
अगर आपको मुझमें किसी भी तरह की आत्मग्रस्तता नहीं दिखाई दी तो मुझे प्रसन्नता है कि आपने एक-दो ही मुलाकातों (वे भी बहुत संक्षिप्त) में मुझे ठीक से पहचाना। मैं जिस परिवार में पैदा हुआ,वह बेहद छोटा था। अर्थात् मेरी माँ और पिता के अलावा आगे-पीछे कोई न था। पिता की केवल एक बड़ी बहन थी जिनके घर-टेहेरका गाँव में मैं सिर्फ़ पैदा हुआ। उधर माँ की तरफ से केवल मेरे मामा और नानी ही थे। मामा ने ब्याह नहीं किया था और वे बुन्देलखण्ड के ठेठ डंगासरे (घोर जंगल में घिरा) के एक गाँव कँदवा में रहते थे।
मेरे पिता ने ईंट-गारा ढोया,मजदूरी की और इसके बाद रेल्वे में प्वाइन्ट्समैन (रेलगाड़ी के डिब्बों को जोड़ने-काटने वाले) की नौकरी की और अन्त में सबसे छोटी नौकरी से ऊपर उठते-उठते पैसेन्जर ट्रेन के गार्ड के रूप में रिटायर हुए। उनका जीवन मेरे सामने हमेशा आदर्श रहा है। उन्होंने किसी काम को हेय नहीं समझा। आप तो जानते ही हैं, मैंने भी इसी तरह इसी भोपाल में प्राइमरी स्कूल टीचर से लेकर रीजनल कालेज में प्रोफेसर और विभागाध्यक्ष तक का सफर तय किया।
जीवन संघर्ष, गरीबी,मारकाट और गलकाट लड़ाई को मैंने दूर से नहीं देखा, उससे गुज़रा हूँ। फिर एक भाई,तीन बहिनों, चार बेटियों और एक बेटे की जिम्मेदारियों से घिरा हुआ आदमी आत्मग्रस्त कैसे हो सकता है। उसे अपने बारे में, अपनी महत्ता के बारे में सोचने की फुर्सत ही कहाँ होती है। फुर्सत तो उनको होती है जो सारी सुख-सुविधाओं के बीच पैदा होते हैं और अचानक उन्हें अपनी प्रतिभा का, अपनी महानता का भान होता है और वे घर छोड़कर ड्राप-आउट का नाटक करते हुए खुद को महान मानते लगते हैं। ऐसा जीवन मुझे नहीं मिला। मेरे बचपन के मोहल्ले में नाई, दर्जी, कुंजड़े,तमोली,कुम्हार,ताँगा हाँकने वाले और हस्सन की माँ जैसी अकेली विधवा मुस्लिम महिला रहती थी। अब इन सबके लड़ाई-झगड़ों, और प्यार और मोहब्बत, और एक दूसरे के लिए जान दे देने वाले, गप्पे कक्का जैसे चाट बेचने वालों के बीच जो जी लिया हो, वह आत्मग्रस्त कैसे हो सकता है। यही मेरे जीवन की पाठशाला थी। क्योंकि इस मुहल्ले में तब तक रहा जब तक मेरी शादी नहीं हो गई। इसी मोहल्ले में मेरी पत्नी बहू बनकर आयी, तब मेरी उम्र 18 वर्ष की थी और मेरी पत्नी की 15 वर्ष की रही।
ऐसी ज़िन्दगी से निकलकर आने वाले के पास आत्मसंयम के अलावा और चारा भी क्या है। और जहाँ तक शिकायतों की ओर आपने इशारा किया, तो मैं शिकायत तो किसी से करता ही नहीं हूँ। दो टूक बोलने का आदी हूँ। आपसे कभी लम्बी बात नहीं हुई, वरना मेरे इस स्वभाव को आप जान जाते। मेरे भीतर एक क्रोध है, जो हमारे एक मित्र उसे होली ऐंगर कहकर टाल जाते हैं।
प्रश्न- प्रथम संग्रह ‘समुद्र के बारे में’लगभग चालीस वर्ष की उम्र में आपने दिया। इतने लम्बे समय तक कैसे आपने स्वयं पर यकीन बनाये रखा। आसपास का वातावरण तो उतावलेपन से लबरेज था। सामान्यतः कविता के प्रकाशन के विषय में इतनी आत्म-चौकसी दिखाई नहीं देती है।
मेरा पहला कविता संग्रह ‘समुद्र के बारे में’1977 में मध्यप्रदेष साहित्य परिषद द्वारा प्रकाशित किया गया। उस समय ‘शानी’जी परिषद के सचिव थे। उन्होंने यह योजना बनायी कि युवा साहित्यकारों की पहली पुस्तक का प्रकाशन परिषद करेगी। इसी योजना के अन्तर्गत मुझको चुना गया। समय बहुत कम था। दो-तीन दिन में किसी भी तरह तीस-पैंतीस कविताएँ चुनकर देनी थीं। छोटा-सा संग्रह निकालने की ही योजना थी। तो यह काम कुछ मित्रों के बीच किया गया था। इस कारण बहुत सारी कविताएँ,जो 1960 के पहले की थीं,इसमें आ ही नहीं पायीं। 1960 के बाद से 1972 तक की कविताओं में से ही उनको चुना गया। वह भी कुछ पैंतीस। जो भी कोई थोड़ी लम्बी कविता दिखी, उसे छोड़ दिया गया। उस समय तक मेरी कविताएँ ‘धर्मयुग’(जब धर्मवीर भारती सम्पादक नहीं थे), ‘लहर”,‘ज्ञानोदय’,‘कल्पना’,‘वातायन’,‘माध्यम’आदि पत्रिकाओं में छप चुकी थीं। इनमें प्रकाशित कोई भी कविता इस संग्रह में नहीं है। क्योंकि मैसूर से 1975 में वापस आते समय मेरी पत्रिकाओं
बहुत बेहतरीन साक्षात्कार है। लगा आँखों के सामने बोल रहे हैं अपने ही अंदाज़ में। रावत चाचा की कविताएँ कहीं गहरे में अंतर्संबंधों को तलाश करने की कविता है। इन कविताओं की आवाज़ में आस-पास के लोगों की ध्वनि है। इंसानी रिश्तों की जटिलतायें और परिस्थितियों का दबाव बचपन में जो चीज़ें देखी है भोगी है वो सब उनकी कविताओं में मिलता है।
