वैचारिक मासिक रविवार के अगले अंक में मातृत्व को ले कर एक रोचक बहस आ रही है। सविता पाठक का कहना है कि मातृत्व कोई इतनी बड़ी चीज नहीं कि उसके लिए करियर की बलि दे जाए। मातृत्व बांधता है, जबकि करियर मुक्त करता है। लोग एक तरफ मातृत्व का महिमा मंडन करते हैं, दूसरी ओर मां बनना स्त्री के करियर की राह में रोड़ा बन जाता है। कई विश्व सुंदरियों को मां होने के कारण अपना ताज वापस करना पड़ा।
दूसरी लेखिका अनन्या भट्ट इसका समर्थन करती हैं, पर यह भी पूछती हैं कि मां बनना इतना बडा काम है कि उसकी कीमत अकेले स्त्री क्यों चुकाए? मां बनना स्त्री के लिए तब बंधनकारी नहीं रह जाएगा जब इसकी कीमत पूरा समाज चुकाए। यानी मातृत्व भी स्त्री के करियर का अंग हो सकता है। स्त्रियां मां बनने से इनकार कर दें, तब देखिए कितना बड़ा तूफान खड़ा हो जाएगा। स्पष्ट है कि बच्चा आता मां-बाप के माध्यम से, पर वह होता समाज का है। इसलिए वह और उसकी जननी, दोनों को सामाजिक सहयोग मिलना चाहिए।

कृपया मातृत्व का झूठा महिमा मंडन न करें

यह फिलीपींस की राजधानी मनीला की एक बेहद खुशनुमा शाम थी। 20 मई 1994 की इस शाम को भारत की एक 18 वर्षीय युवती से पूछा गया कि ‘औरत होने का मर्म क्या है।‘ (वाट इज द एसेंस ऑफ बीईंग वूमन)। 18 साल की इस युवती ने जो जवाब दिया उसने तमाम लोगों के दिलों को बाग-बाग कर दिया। युवती ने कहा कि औरत होना ईश्वर का एक वरदान है, जिसकी कद्र हम सभी को करनी चाहिए। बच्चे की उत्पत्ति मां से होती है। मां ही आदमी को सहयोग करना, सहेजना और अपने आस-पास की चीजों से प्यार करना सिखाती है। यही औरत होने का मर्म है।
मिस यूनीवर्स प्रतियोगिता के अंतिम दौर में पूछे गए इस सवाल का जो जवाब भारत की सुष्मिता सेन ने दिया, उसने निर्णायक मंडल को सुष्मिता के पक्ष में फैसला लेने पर मजबूर कर दिया। सौन्दर्य प्रतियोगिता के ‘मासूम समर्थकों’ ने कुछ ऐसी ही व्याख्या की। धर्म और बाजार दोनों ही औरत के मर्म को समझ गए। सुष्मिता सेन उस साल की मिस यूनीवर्स बनीं। औरत के मातृत्व के कसीदे पढ़े गए। वह जन्म देती है। जीवन की उत्पत्ति का माध्यम वह है। इसलिए औरत होना दुनिया की सब से खूबसूरत बात है। औरत से ही जीवन का सृजन है। लेकिन, मातृत्व के गुणगान के ये तमाम कसीदे केवल ढकोसला ही साबित हुए।
इसे आठ साल बाद इसी प्रतियोगिता ने साबित किया। रूस की सुंदरी अलेक्सा फेदोरोवा को 2002 में मिस यूनीवर्स का ताज पहनाया गया। अपने ताज के साथ ही वे तमाम प्रतिनिधि मंडलों में शामिल होती थीं और मिस यूनीवर्स के तौर पर उनकी भव्यता देखने लायक थी। उन्हें सबसे खूबसूरत मिस यूनीवर्सों में शुमार किया जाता रहा। लेकिन, उपाधि हासिल करने के चार महीने बाद ही उन्होंने अपना ताज लौटा दिया। आम तौर पर यह माना जाता है कि ताज धारण करने के चार महीने बाद ही गर्भवती होने के चलते प्रतियोगिता के आयोजकों ने उनसे ताज वापस ले लिया। उन पर तमाम तरह के दबाव बनाए गए। इसके चलते उन्होंने निजी कारणों का हवाला देकर खुद ही ताज वापस कर दिया। फेदोरोवा ने कहा कि वह कानून की अपनी पढ़ाई पूरी करने के लिए ताज लौटा रही हैं। उनकी जगह पनामा की जस्टिन पासेक को ताज पहनाया गया। फेदोरोवा को अपने गर्भवती होने यानी मातृत्व के उसी अधिकार की कीमत चुकानी पड़ी जिसे आठ साल पहले इसी प्रतियोगिता के निर्णायकों ने औरत होने की सबसे खूबसूरत बात मानी थी। फेदोरोवा को अब भूतपूर्व मिस यूनीवर्स में भी नहीं गिना जाता।
मां होने की कीमत चुकाने की एक और घटना सौंदर्य प्रतियोगिता से ही जुड़ी हुई है। 1974 में यूनाईटेड किंगडम की हेलेन मोर्गन को मिस वर्ल्ड चुना गया। लेकिन, सुंदरता का यह ताज धारण करने के चार दिन बाद ही उन्हें इसे वापस करना पड़ा। ताज जीतने के बाद किसी तरह से खुलासा हुआ कि मोर्गन का 18 महीने का एक बेटा है। प्रतियोगिता में हालांकि बच्चा नहीं होने की शर्त शामिल नहीं थी। केवल अविवाहित होने की ही शर्त रखी गई थी और मोर्गन विवाहित नहीं थीं। लेकिन, बच्चे की बात खुलने के बाद आयोजकों के भारी दबाव में मोर्गन को अपनी उपाधि छोड़नी पड़ी। उनकी जगह दक्षिण अफ्रीका की एनीनील क्रिएल को मिस वर्ल्ड घोषित किया गया।
अपना ताज आधिकारिक तौर पर वापस करने वाली मोर्गन पहली मिस वर्ल्ड/यूनीवर्स हैं। लेकिन, मां होने की कीमत अपने करियर से चुकाने वाली मोर्गन जैसी न जाने की कितनी ही महिलाएं हैं। ये महिलाएं किसी सौंदर्य प्रतियोगिता में शामिल नहीं होतीं। न ही इनके चारों तरफ कैमरों की चमक-दमक है। इनके चारों तरफ कोई ग्लैमर भरी दुनिया नहीं है। ये तो इस दुनिया में अपने हक के लिए संघर्ष कर रही हैं। छोटे-छोटे दफ्तरों से लेकर बड़ी बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियों के कार्यालयों तक इन महिलाओं ने अपनी मौजूदगी बेहद मजबूती के साथ दर्ज की है। वे हर काम में पुरुषों के कंधों से कंधा मिलाकर चलने को तैयार हैं। पर हर जगह ही उन्हें दोहरे स्तर के व्यवहार का शिकार होना पड़ता है। और मातृत्व अक्सर ही उनके करियर की बलि भी लेता रहता है। एक नए जीवन के सृजन की कीमत उन्हें अपने सपनों को कब्र में दफन करके चुकानी पड़ती है।
चमक-दमक और सुंदरता के बाहरी आवरण के पीछे कारपोरेट की यह दुनिया कितनी क्रूर है, जिंदगी में इसके उदाहरण भरे पड़े हैं। कारपोरेट कंपनियों के लिए प्रबंधक तैयार करने वाले एक निजी कॉलेज में एक-एक करके तीन शिक्षिकाओं से इस्तीफा ले लिया गया। कर्मचारियों की भलाई के लिए बनाए गए एचआर विभाग को इन महिलाओं के गर्भवती होने की पक्की सूचना मिल गई थी। कंपनी ने पूरा हिसाब-किताब किया। गर्भवती होने के चलते पहले तो काम-काज में सुस्ती फिर तीन महीने की लीव विदाउट पे। अपने कर्मचारी पर इतना खर्च करने से ज्यादा अच्छा मैनेजमेंट ने उनसे इस्तीफा ले लेना समझा। इन तीनों महिलाओं की नौकरी ऐसे समय में चली गई जब उन्हें इसकी सबसे ज्यादा जरूरत पड़ने वाली थी।
अपने मां बनने के अधिकार के लिए भारी-भरकम कीमत चुकाने वाली इन महिलाओं की आवाज दबी-ढंकी रह गई। क्योंकि, उन्होंने कहीं इसके खिलाफ आवाज नहीं उठाई। उन्होंने चुपचाप अपने साथ हुए इस अन्याय को किस्मत मानकर संतोष कर लिया। लेकिन, यह कोई अकेली घटना नहीं है। ऐसे संस्थानों की कोई गिनती नहीं है जो किसी महिला कर्मचारी को अपने यहां काम देने से पहले यह जरूर ताकीद कर लेते हैं कि कोई ‘ईशू’ तो नहीं है। यानी महिला गर्भवती तो नहीं है या उसके बच्चे छोटे तो नहीं है। अगर है तो नौकरी मिलने की गुंजाइश में भारी कमी हो सकती है।
स्त्री की आजादी और साझे अधिकार का हक हासिल करने में मातृत्व का सवाल एक प्रमुख सवाल के तौर पर मौजूद रहता है। हर दौर की नारीवादी लेखिकाओं और आंदोलन कर्ताओं ने इस सवाल को अपने तईं उठाया भी है और उसका हल तलाशने की कोशिश भी की है। नारी अधिकारों का घोषणापत्र तैयार करने में अहम भूमिका निभाने वाली एलीन मार्गन अपनी किताब ‘डिसेंट ऑफ वोमेन’ में स्त्री और पुरुष की अलग-अलग स्थिति का हवाला देते हुए लिखती हैं कि ‘आर्थिक उत्पादन में सामान्य महिलाएं उतनी भागीदारी नहीं निभा पातीं जितना पुरुष निभाते हैं। इसका सीधा सा कारण है कि महिलाओं को बच्चों का लालन-पालन करना पड़ता है और वे श्रमिक होने के साथ ही पत्नी भी हैं। सोलह-सत्रह साल की उम्र में जब लड़का उत्साह से आगे बढ़ता है और उसका तात्कालिक उद्देश्य अपना करियर होता है वहीं लड़की को ठीक उससे उलट बात सिखाई जाती है और उसके लक्ष्य को घर-परिवार तक सीमित कर दिया जाता है।‘
मोर्गन आगे लिखती हैं कि ‘कभी-कभी यह दोहरी भूमिका उसके लिए लाभदायक होती है, किंतु अधिकतर उसे इससे हानि होती है। उदाहरण के लिए व्यवसाय में लगा हुआ पुरुष अपने काम को यदि असुविधाजनक और तकलीफदेह समझता है तब भी वह उससे चिपका रहकर संघर्ष करता रहता है, क्योंकि वह जानता है कि यदि उसने यह छोड़ दिया तो न केवल उसकी प्रतिष्ठा पर ही आंच आएगी बल्कि उसकी आमदनी भी रुक जाएगी। जबकि, किसी विवाहित महिला के सामने यह स्थिति आने पर अपनी असफलता को अनुभव किए बिना वह अपने आप से (और दूसरों से भी) यह कहते हुए वहां से हट जाएगी कि इससे उसके गृहस्थ जीवन पर प्रभाव पड़ रहा था और कर्तव्यबोध ने उसे प्रेरित किया कि वह अपने घर के लिए अधिक समय दे।‘
मोर्गन कहती हैं कि छोटे-छोटे बच्चों वाली एक महिला मजबूरी की अवस्था में (निर्धनता अथवा पिता की मृत्यु या अनुपस्थिति के कारण) एक श्रमिक और एक मां की दोनों ही भूमिकाएं और दायित्व का निर्वहन करती है, क्योंकि वह इनमें से किसी को भी छोड़ने की स्थिति में नहीं होती, इसके लिए चाहे जितना भी मानसिक और शारीरिक तनाव क्यों न सहना पड़े। जबकि छोटे बच्चे को अगर कोई स्त्री छोड़कर चली जाए तो पुरुष शायद ही इस तरह का प्रयास करता है।
इन और इन जैसी हजार असमानताओं के कारण ही स्त्रियां अब यह कहने लगी हैं कि वह तब तक स्वतंत्र नहीं हो सकती हैं जब तक कि उसकी पीठ पर लदा हुआ बच्चों का बोझ नहीं हटता। चूंकि वह बच्चों को जन्म देती हैं तो सिर्फ इसी कारण से यह जरूरी नहीं हो जाता कि उनका पालन भी उन्हें ही करना पड़े। यह दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण ही है कि स्त्री का जो मर्म है वहीं स्त्री की मुक्ति में सबसे बड़ी बाधा बनकर खड़ी हो जाता है।
हालांकि, समाज में इस तरह के प्रश्न करने वाली स्त्रियों की छवि कुछ इस तरह प्रस्तुत की जाती है कि वह उच्छृंखल है, बनी-ठनी रहती है, उस पर पश्चिमी सभ्यता का असर है, वह गैरजिम्मेदार है, कामचोर है, दिखावटी और चरित्रहीन है। स्त्री मुक्ति की यह भ्रामक तस्वीर उन जड़ पूर्वाग्रहियों द्वारा फैलाई गई है जो औरत को गुलाम बनाए रखना चाहते हैं। इस गलत छवि का दुष्प्रचार वे अपने हितों के लिए करते हैं, जिससे स्त्री अपनी मुक्ति की बात न सोचें।
वास्तविक तौर पर देखा जाए तो मुक्ति शब्द दुनिया भर की न्यायप्रिय जनता द्वारा किए गए उन संघर्षों की उपज हैं, जो उन्होंने अपने अधिकारों को प्राप्त करने के लिए किए और जिनके दौरान उन्होंने अनगिनत कुर्बानियां दीं। स्त्री की गुलामी की कहानी सनातन और शाश्वत नहीं है। मानव समाज में स्त्री की गुलाम स्थिति शुरू से नहीं थी। आदि काल में लोग कबीले बनाकर सामूहिक रूप से रहा करते थे। वे आपस में मिल-जुलकर चीजों का उत्पादन करते थे और मिल- बांटकर उनका उपभोग करते थे। कोई चीज अपनी या पराई नहीं थी। सब कुछ कबीले का था। किसी के पास अपनी कोई निजी संपत्ति नहीं होती थी। इस दौर में स्त्रियों व पुरुषों में कोई भेदभाव नहीं था। वे दोनों ही कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर घर व बाहर का काम करते थे। स्त्री की गुलामी की तो बात ही क्या, बच्चा पैदा करने और सृष्टि को आगे बढ़ाने की प्रकृतिजन्य क्षमता के चलते स्त्री का विशेष सम्मान होता था और वे ही कबीले की मुखिया भी होती थीं।
समाज आगे बढ़ने के साथ ही कबीले में अतिरिक्त उत्पादन होने लगा, जिसके स्वामित्व के सवाल पर कबीलों की सामूहिकता टूट गई। अलग-अलग परिवार बनने लगे। इन परिवारों में पुरुष तो पहले की तरह बाहर की उत्पादन क्रियाओं से जुड़ा रहा, लेकिन स्त्री प्रसव व बच्चों की देखभाल के नाम पर बाहर की समस्त उत्पादन क्रियाओं (जैसे खेती, शिकार आदि) से काट दी गई। उत्पादन क्रियाओं से निरंतर जुड़े रहने के कारण पुरुष धीरे-धीरे समस्त पैदावारों और परिवार का मालिक बन बैठा और स्त्री की स्थिति धीरे-धीरे दोयम दर्जे की होती चली गई।
स्त्री के लिए स्थिति इस हद तक खराब होती गई कि उसे चल संपत्ति माना जाने लगा। उसे उपपत्नी या वेश्या के रूप में भोग्या बनाया जाने लगा। ज्यादातर मानव समुदायों में उसे जन्मजात रूप से हीन माना जाने लगा। यह हीनता शारीरिक, मानसिक और नैतिक रूप से आरोपित थी। उसे मानव प्रजाति का अंश ही नहीं माना जाता था, पुरुष पूरी गंभीरता से इस बात पर बहस किया करते थे कि स्त्री के पास आत्मा होती भी है या नहीं। यदि आप को विश्वास हो कि स्त्रियां मानसिक रूप से हीन हैं तो आप उनकी शिक्षा का प्रबंध नहीं करेंगे और जब तक आप उन्हें शिक्षित नहीं करते तब तक वे अपरिपक्व बनी रहेंगी।
एलीन मोर्गन अपनी किताब ‘डिसेंट ऑफ वूमन’ में इस दोहरी स्थिति का बयान कुछ इस तरह करती हैं — ‘जरा उस व्यक्ति के बारे में सोचिए जो काम करने के लिए कार्यालय जाता है। वह जो कुछ भी करता है, उसके लिए उसका भुगतान किया जाता है। जो लोग उसका भुगतान करते हैं उन्होंने बहुत अधिक सुविचार करके और योजना बनाकर यह निश्चित किया है कि वह कैसे और क्या काम करेगा। काम पर पहुंचने के लिए वह कार या रेल में एक घंटा या अधिक समय लगा सकता है। वह शहर के उस हिस्से में पहुंचता है जहां मकानों के एक पूरे सिलसिले पर बुलडोजर चला दिया जाता है और उनकी जगह काफी बड़े क्षेत्र में विशेषरूप से कार्यस्थल पर नियोजित ऊंची-ऊंची इमारतें खड़ी कर दी गई हैं। भले ही वह व्यवसाय के यंत्र का छोटा सा पुर्जा हो और बहुत अधिक धन अर्जित नहीं कर पा रहा हो, तथापि इस बात का ध्यान रखा गया है कि वह कम से कम व्यवधान के बिना काम कर सके। सुबह-सुबह कोई उसके लिए काफी का कप लाता है, और बाद में शायद वह अपने कुछ साथियों के साथ कहीं लंच के लिए जाता है, जब वह अपने घर लौटता है तो उसे अच्छा यही लगता है कि उससे यह आशा तो नहीं ही रखी जाए कि वह खरीददारी, रसोई बनाने और सफाई करने जैसे घरेलू काम में जुटेगा। जबकि पत्नी सारा दिन घर में रही है और उसने बच्चे की देखभाल के अलावा कुछ और नहीं किया। हालांकि, पति ने वास्तव में अपने काम के लिए जो इस्तेमाल किया है वह है सिर्फ एक मेज और टेलीफोन।‘
‘इसके विपरीत बच्चों के लालन-पालन का काम, जो अर्थ व्यवस्था के लिए बराबर महत्व का कार्य है, अपने सभी अभिप्रायों और उद्देश्यों की दृष्टि से एक कुटीर उद्योग बना हुआ है। कल्पना करें कि पति अपनी मेज और टेलीफोन के साथ घर में रहता है और उसकी पत्नी शिशु पालन के श्रमसाध्य दिवस के दायित्व को पूरा करने के लिए सुबह आठ बजे घर से निकल जाती है और उस जगह पहुंचती है जहां बालू के ढेर और खेलने के मैदान हैं, एक तैराकी का उथला तालाब और शांत सोने की कोठरियां, पोतड़े साफ करने की जगह, बच्चों के कार्यक्रम के लिए टेलीविजन का कमरा और ऊंची-ऊंची कुर्सियों वाला बच्चों के खाने का कमरा, एक जलपान गृह हैं, जहां माताएं बारी-बारी से अपना भोजन करती हैं, टाइपिस्ट के स्थान पर कुछ विशेषज्ञ कार्यरत हैं जो बोतलों को कीटाणुरहित करते हैं और दिन की समाप्ति पर बोतलों और कार्यालय की सफाई करते हैं। यहां पर पत्नी को यह अनुभव होने लगता है कि उसका काम भी उसके पति के काम जितना ही महत्वपूर्ण है। अगर उसके पास इतनी गुंजाइश है कि वह इस पर सोच-विचार कर सके, तो वह यह भी जान सकती है कि अन्य कामों की अपेक्षा यह कार्य अधिक परितोष्य और रोमांचक है।‘
निश्चित तौर पर मातृत्व एक सुखद अनुभव है। मां और बच्चे के बीच का बंधन अटूट होता है। मनुष्य के विकास की हजारों साल की यात्रा के तमाम पड़ावों को मां अपने बच्चे की मासूम उंगलियां पकड़कर चंद सालों में ही पूरा करा देती है। लेकिन, बच्चे के पालन-पोषण से जुड़ी हुई जटिलताएं बहुत सी महिलाओं को इस नैसर्गिक संतोष से वंचित कर देता है। मातृत्व प्राप्त करने के लिए वे सालों की मेहनत से हासिल अपने करियर को दांव पर शायद नहीं लगाना चाहती।

मातृत्व एक सामाजिक जिम्मेदारी

स्त्रीवादी दार्शनिक शुलामिथ स्टोन ने कहा था कि गर्भाशय ही स्त्रियों का वास्तविक शत्रु है। स्त्री तब तक स्वतंत्र नहीं हो सकती, जब तक बच्चा पैदा करने का जिम्मा उसे सौंपा हुआ है। बच्चा नौ महीने तक गर्भाशय के बाहर पले, तभी वह न केवल सामान्य जीवन जी सकती है, बल्कि अपनी गरिमा और सम्मान को बचाए रख सकती है। बहुत सारी स्त्रियां इस तर्क को स्वीकार करेंगी, क्योंकि करियर के कारण ही वे घर से निकल पाती हैं और उनके हाथ में कुछ पैसा आता है।
लेकिन करियर के लिए मातृत्व का त्याग करने वाली स्त्रियों के दो वर्ग है। एक वर्ग उनका है जिनके लिए ऊंची से ऊंची सत्ता और अधिकाधिक आय पुरुषों की तरह ही महत्वपूर्ण हैं। ऐसी स्त्रियां अपनी महत्वाकाक्षाओं की पूर्ति के लिए गर्भाशय तो क्या, और भी अनेक चीजों को छोड़ सकती हैं। सत्ता और संपन्नता स्त्रियों के लिए बुरी नहीं हैं। किसी भी चीज पर पुरुष वर्ग का एकाधिकार नहीं होना चाहिए। हां, इस पर जरूर विचार किया जा सकता है कि जिस तरह कुत्ता अपनी दुम के पीछे चक्कर काटता रहता है, उसी तरह सत्ता के इर्द-गिर्द भरतनाट्यम करने वाले पुरुषों को क्या सभ्यता का आदर्श बनाया जा सकता है? स्कूल से ले कर श्मशान तक प्रतिद्वंद्विता के आधार पर चलने वाली कोई भी सभ्यता टिकाऊ नहीं हो सकती। इसलिए यह मान पाना मुश्किल है कि ऐसी जिद्दी स्त्रियां स्त्री मुक्ति का मार्ग खोल रही हैं। यह तो चूल्हे से निकल कर कड़ाही में पड़ने जैसी स्थिति है।
अधिक संख्या उन स्त्रियों की है जो नौकरी करके किसी तरह परिवार चलाने के लिए माँ नहीं बन पा रही हैं या मां नहीं बन पाईं। या उनकी, जो गृहस्थी और नौकरी के बीच निरंतर पिसते हुए अपने लिए दिन भर में एक घंटा भी नहीं बचा पातीं। असली समस्या इन दो वर्गों के लिए है। यह समस्या इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण है कि ऐसी स्त्रियों का जीवन सरल बनाने के लिए समाज ने कुछ भी नहीं किया है। साल-दो साल की मैटर्निटी लीव इस समस्या का कोई हल नहीं है। बच्चे को पेट में वहन करने, जन्म देने और आदमी बनाने में कम से कम दस वर्ष लगते हैं।
