निर्मल वर्मा, हिंदी साहित्य का एक ऐसा नाम जिन्होंने कला और कथ्य में शायद ही कोई फर्क रखा हो। कहने की जल्दबाजी में अक्सर कथाकार कला के अपने लक्ष्य से भटक जाता है। लाज़िमी है क्योंकि काफी नहीं केवल संवेदनाएं भर होना एक कथाकार में। कला के परिपक्व रूप तक पहुचने के लिए ऐसे बहुत से बिंदु होते हैं जिनसे दृष्टिगत होकर कलाकार को एक स्केनिंग से गुज़रना होता है और यह बिल्कुल भी सरल कार्य नहीं।
बहुत बार सुनने में आता है कि निर्मल वर्मा का लेखन अपने तरह के अवसाद के लिए जाना जाता है। एक ठंडा अवसाद जिसे पाठक अपनी रूह तक महसूस करता है। मैं सोचती हूँ कई बार कि आखिर यह अवसाद है क्या? क्या मैंने कभी महसूस किया इस अवसाद को? या निर्मल वर्मा को पढ़ते हुए मुझे किसी आलोचक का यह कथन कभी याद आया? तो इन सब बातों का एक ही उत्तर मुझे खुद से मिलता है-नहीं, कभी नहीं। निर्मल वर्मा के लेखन में अवसाद कभी नहीं मिला मुझे और जो अंतर्वस्तु अपनी क्षमताओं के भरे-पूरे रूप में उनकी कला और कथ्य जगत में मिली है वह तो एक समृद्ध फॉर्म में हिंदी साहित्य को एक अलग ही प्लेटफॉर्म पर सुदृढ़ रखे हुए है।
तो आखिर वह कौनसा तत्व है जो आलोचकों और ज्यादातर पाठकों को उनके लेखन में अवसाद की अधिकता मूल रूप से दिखाता है?
क्या ऐसा कुछ और हो सकता है जिसे अवसाद के स्थान पर रखकर निर्मल वर्मा जैसे सरीखे कथाकार को कला और यथार्थ के मध्य पड़े भग्नावेशों से विशुद्ध रूप में सहज उपजी अनुभूति का आध्यात्मिक स्मरण कराये। शायद यह कुछ रोचक या हैरान करने वाला तथ्य हो सकता है कि कला के जिस पक्ष को लेकर निर्मल वर्मा ने अपने समय में जिस साहित्य की रचना की वह समकालीन जीवन को अति उत्कट रूप में सबसे ज्यादा प्रभावित करता है। निर्मल वर्मा के लेखन में कल्पना का पुट आतंक नहीं फैलाता। हालांकि यह आतंक भी अपनी जगह अपीलिंग होता है लेकिन यहाँ खासतौर पर निर्मल जी की लेखन शैली पर बात हो रही है तो यह कहना होगा कि यहाँ भावनात्मक थकान अक्सर दिखाई देती है जिसे अवसाद का नाम दिया गया है। निर्मल वर्मा की एक जिज्ञासु पाठक होने के नाते मैं उनके इस गंभीर, व्याकुल आत्मा के प्रत्येक कोष की निराशा और एकाकीपन को भावनात्मक थकान का नाम दूंगी और एक संवाद जिसे हम अपनी आत्मा से बात करना कहते हैं वह है निर्मल वर्मा के साहित्यिक कर्म की रंगभूमि। हैरानी की बात तो यह है कि यह अनोखा आत्मालाप पाठक को थपकी देता है, तीव्र विचारों से मुक्ति दिलाता है और जीवन की तमाम घटनाओं-दुर्घटनाओं के लिए चिंतनशील बनाता है। यही है वह ठिठुरन जो अक्सर निर्मल वर्मा के लेखन में महसूस होती है।
साहित्य का एक लक्ष्य अवश्य होना चाहिए।चाहे कल्पना और यथार्थ के बोध की बैलेंस्ड या इम्बैलेंस्ड अभिव्यक्ति ही हो पर होनी ही चाहिए। हम निर्मल वर्मा की अभूतपूर्व कृतियों की चर्चा करे तो कई लोकप्रिय कहानियां और हमारी हर एक की अपनी पसंद की कहानियां हैं जिनसे हम खुद को जोड़ कर पाते हैं। यही उनके उपन्यासों के साथ भी है। यह एक श्रृंखलाबद्ध सिरहन है और उनमे मुझे अहसास होती है मानवीय आध्यात्मिकता। जब मैं कहती हूँ आध्यात्मिकता तो इससे मेरा आशय है एक गल्प या कथा के औरा से बाहर एक अति विशिष्ट और भीतरी साहस का स्पंदन। एक ऐसा स्पंदन जिसे शून्य की शर्त पर अवचेतन ग्रहण करता है।
बहुत सरल सा प्रश्न है कि क्या निर्मल वर्मा का लेखन ऊब भरी पेचीदगी की जानी-पहचानी चरमावस्था को केंद्र में रख कर बुना हुआ है? तो मैं कहना चाहूंगी कि हाँ यह बेशक ऐसा ही है और इस ऊब की पेचीदगी में एक अपरिभाष्य करुणा भाव प्रतिबिंबित होता है जिसे आडम्बरों और विडंबनाओं के परे जाकर ही देखा जा सकता है। यह हमारे लिए निर्णायक स्थिति हो सकती है कि हम किसी कथाकार का कौनसा हिस्सा चुने और यह कथाकार के लिए भी एक निर्णायक स्थिति होती है कि वह अपने अवचेतन से अपना कौनसा हिस्सा अपने लेखकीय पक्ष को देना चाहता है। अक्सर इस तरह की बातें भी निर्मल वर्मा के बारे में कही जाती रही हैं कि उन्होंने अभिजात और बौद्धिक वर्ग को केंद्र में रखकर अपना लेखन रचा। लेकिन यहाँ भी विडम्बना ही है कि जिन ऊर्जाओं और मध्यवर्गीय समस्याओं को निर्मल जी ने अपने लेखन में माईन्यूटली उतारा क्या वह उनकी कला के पक्ष को एक मजबूत आधार नहीं देता? क्या कला के सभी संस्कार अदृश्य होकर अपने आभामंडल में उनके गद्य को अप्रतिम सौंदर्य नहीं देते?
निर्मल वर्मा हिंदी साहित्य का ऐसा नाम और नक्श है जिनके बिना नयी कहानी आंदोलन अपूर्ण माना जाएगा। संवेदनाये चाहे अभिजात वर्ग से सम्बंधित हो या किसान से या किसी मध्यवर्गीय इंसान से कला में उठाये जाने वाले पक्ष सदा से ही यथार्थ का मूल्यांकन करते आये हैं। मैं एक अबोध चिंतन पाती हूँ निर्मल वर्मा के लेखन में।एक ऐसा चिंतन जो अपनी व्यथा में विस्तृत है,जिसमे मर्म की भाषा है और जो लेखन के रीति-रिवाज़ों के भूखंड पर नहीं खड़ा। यहाँ भाषा का अनिवार्यतम सौंदर्य है जो अनायास ही मुग्ध करता है।
निर्मल वर्मा के अद्भुत लेखन में न केवल भाषाई सौंदर्य अपने चरम पर है बल्कि एक अनंतता जिसे साधारण तौर पर मनुष्य अपने भीतर के द्वीपों पर अक्सर देखता है,एक विशुद्ध आत्मालाप, एक नीरस मगर चमत्कृत, श्रेष्ठ और सम्मानजनक मानवीय आनंद। क्या यह वो वैभव नहीं जिसे हम न केवल जीवन में बल्कि साहित्य में भी तलाशते हैं।
क्या यह वैभवपूर्ण आत्मालाप हमें उनके किरदारों में नहीं दिखाई देता। फिर चाहे वो ‘एक चिथड़ा सुख‘ की बिट्टी हो या डैरी। ‘रात का रिपोर्टर‘का रिशी हो या हॉलबाख या फिर ‘अमालिया‘ की अमालिया हो या ‘वे दिन‘ की रायना रेमान। कौन भूल सकता है निर्मल वर्मा के ‘धूप का एक टुकड़ा‘ और ‘डेढ़ इंच ऊपर‘ जैसे खूबसूरत मोनोलॉग? और किसे नहीं याद होगी ‘लाल टीन की छत‘ की काया?
जो पाठक वर्ग निर्मल वर्मा के लेखन को आत्मसात कर चुका है वे उनके लेखन पर उठे इन तमाम तरह के प्रश्नों पर केवल मुस्कुरा ही पाते हैं। सारतत्व में निर्मल वर्मा का सृजन एक पवित्र पीड़ा की ठोस वास्तविकता को उदासी की भाव-शून्यता पर ले जाता है और वहीं से प्रारंभ होते है ऐसे रेखाचित्र जो सघन और तरल परिदृश्य रचते हैं। जहाँ एक पुरातन शोक का अविस्मरणीय संगीत नैराश्य में अपनी अनेक प्रतिध्वनियों के साथ हमें बार-बार मिलता है।
निर्मल वर्मा का उपन्यास ‘लाल टीन की छत‘ मेरे लिए एक ऐसी घटना थी जिसमें मैं कई महीनों रही। ‘काया‘ का भटकना,उसका चुपचाप पहाड़ों पर अकेले घूमना, रेलगाड़ी से निकलते धुएँ को देखते रहना,सब मुझे उसका अपना होने का अहसास कराते थे।
यह कविता मेरे प्रिय लेखक ‘निर्मल वर्मा‘ की ‘काया‘ ( काया, ‘लाल टीन की छत‘ में किशोरी का नाम है, जिसके इर्द गिर्द ही पूरा उपन्यास बुना है ) को समर्पित है.

जब मेरी परिपक्व देह में
स्त्री खोज रहे थे.
तो यह मेरी प्रीति के कई जन्मों की यात्रा थी.
मैंने पहचाना तुम्हारा स्पर्श
तुम्हारी गति
तुम्हारा दबाव
तुम्हारी लय.
हमारी मृदुल स्मृतियों में मैं एक भावपूर्ण नृत्यांगना थी
और
एक उपासक भी.
उस पहाड़ की, जिस पर देवी का मंदिर था.
प्रसाद रूप में अर्पित किए गेंदा-पुष्पों और सिंदूर से मेरी आस्था कभी नही जुड़ी.
मेरी आस्था थी देवी की नीली रहस्मयी जीभ में..
मेरी आस्था थी उसकी फैली बड़ी लाल जालों से भरी आँखों में.
और
उसके क्रोधित सौंदर्य में उठे पैर की विनाशक आभा में.
महिषासुर…..
बलशाली भुजाओं वाला महिषासुर वहाँ अपनी अंतिम निद्रा में था.
इस दृश्य का भय
केवल तुम जानते थे
और मेरी आस्थाओं को भी केवल तुम देख पाते थे.
तब भी तुम्हारे हाथ दक्ष थे
पतंग उड़ाने में
बेर तोड़ने में,संतरे छीलने में
और
प्रथम रक्तस्त्राव की असहनीय पीड़ा से बहें मेरे आँसू पोंछने में.
आज भी तुम्हारे हाथ दक्ष हैं
हमारे अंतर्जगत की दुनियां का बेहद बारीक चित्रण करने वाले अप्रतिम चित्रकार जिनके पास इन अद्भुत रंगोँ से कुशलतापूर्वक खेलने की दुर्लभ कूँची है …के कृतित्व का गहन मनोयोग से …भावपूर्ण चित्रण अत्यन्त सराहनीय है !!!
