The Gunner’s Dream (Waters)
Floating down through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now.
In the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream.
I had a dream.
Good-bye Max.
Good-bye Ma.
After the service when you’re walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air
You hear the tolling bell
And touch the silk in your lapel
And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
You take her frail hand
And hold on to the dream.

A place to stay
“Oi! A real one …”
Enough to eat
Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud
About your doubts and fears
And what’s more no-one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door.
You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don’t blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
And everyone has recourse to the law
And no-one kills the children anymore.
And no one kills the children anymore.
Night after night
Going round and round my brain
His dream is driving me insane.
In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight.
What’s done is done.
We cannot just write off his final scene.
Take heed of his dream.
Take heed

An interesting incident related to this song:
I studied at Sainik School Ghorakhal. When we were in senior classes i.e. 11th and 12th standard, high ranking officers from Defence Forces would come to meet us and encourage us to have a career with the Defence Forces.
During one such interaction with a General who was one of highest ranking officers of the local command, one of my friends asked an important question, “Sir, with due respect, can we dare to imagine a world where no country has any armies? No one attacks anyone and there is really no need to have forces at all.” Now, please notice that my friend here had not yet been exposed to any Beatles songs including Imagine.
The answer that the General there gave to my friends has stayed with me ever since. First of all, he did not get angry even as my friend hinted at the needlessness of the General’s existence. Instead, he was visibly very happy that we were able to question the most basic fundamentals.

As most of us hormone-inspired young guns sat there with various levels of anger towards our friend for having asked such an annoying question, the General spoke, “The first thing to note is that we are a ‘defence’ force. We don’t mean to attack at all. But we need to be like a wrestler who doesn’t fight anyone, helps everyone and is a likeable fellow but people also know that he is strong. As a soldier, I only dream of peace. I would hate it if I had to go and put myself and my teammates in harm’s way. Any given day, I would choose peace over war.”
