नए कमरे में उसने कई करवटें बदलीं। नई जगह का उनींदा। सिरोही राज के गैस्टहाउस में न घर अपना और न कमरा। भारी-भरकम, समय से पिछड़ा हुआ पलँग। किसी असली की सस्ती नकल। नीले थोथेवाली दीवारों की पुताई। खिड़कियों के काँच पर सफेदी के धब्बे। दरवाजों की लकड़ी सस्ते रंग-रोगन से बदरंग। परदे यहाँ-वहाँ से अपनी चौखट से गिरे मजबूरी में लटके हुए। बेमतलब। बेवजह।
हर चीज की वजह होनी भी क्यों जरूरी है? उसने उठकर एक बार फिर किवाड़ की चिटकनी देखी। बत्ती बन्द की। निपट अँधेरा।
नहीं।
बाथरूम के कमजोर बल्ब की मद्धम सी पीली रोशनी ने मानो आश्वस्त किया हो। सिर को छुआ। कहीं कुछ उजाले की पहुँच वहाँ भी है कि सिर्फ अँधेरा ही अँधेरा! पुराने ठिये से उखडऩा, पुराने लगावों से दूर होना और वतन को पीछे छोडऩा क्या एक ही बात है? लाहौर से दिल्ली और दिल्ली से सिरोही—
कैसे पढ़ा जाएगा इस नई लिपि को। नई रियासती वर्णमाला! क्या पहचान में आ रहा है नया लैंडस्केप। नई जलवायु! जाने किस धुँधलके में से होकर निकल रही हूँ।
उधर एम.ए. का फार्म, इधर विज्ञापन देख अप्लाई कर दिया। दोचित्ता परायापन कि अपनों से दूर न हो जाऊँ और परायों के नजदीक न हो जाऊँ। काश स्टेशन से लौट जाती—बस कल के लिए मुल्तवी कर दो यह ऊहापोह।
आँखें बन्द कीं। गजर की टंकार। बारह। अभी सुबह होने में बहुत देर है। एकाएक भारी-भरकम बूटों का शोर। जैसे फौज की टुकडिय़ाँ गुजर रही हों। दिल-दिमाग में खलबली मच गई। बेलचापार्टी। गुजरात सराफे से निकल रही है फौज की-सी वरदी में सियासी पार्टी।
कोई डर-भय!
नहीं।
लकड़ी के बड़े फाटक के अन्दर हवेली का सुरक्षित संसार। तीन पाटोंवाला ऊँचा लकड़ी का फाटक। मजबूती दिखाती पीतल की कीलों की जड़त।
खुले बड़े सहन में पक्के चबूतरे पर कुईं। सामने ड्योढ़ी-हवेली का मुखद्वार। नीचे-ऊपर, कमरे, परकोटे, बैठकें और तहखानों की ओर उतरती सँकरी पैडिय़ाँ।
खोला था उसने एक दिन वह कपाट। बासी बोसीदा गंध से सना अँधेरा। गुमसुम। ऐसे गरदीले तहखाने की खोह में मुझे दिखा था एक उल्लू। आँखों को मितली होने लगी और मैं दौड़कर ऊपर आ गई। शोर मचा दिया—तहखाने में देखा—एक उल्लू! आँखों में दो बटन-से लगे थे।
दादी माँ ने टोका—बच्ची, इसका नाम नहीं लेना। तुमने कोई और परिन्दा देखा होगा!
—नहीं, दादी माँ, नहीं। जानती हूँ, वह उल्लू था।
—दादी ने पास बुलाया—भूल जाओ, तुमने कुछ देखा भी है।
—क्यों दादी माँ?
—जिस घर, हवेली में यह अपशकुनी बैठ जाए, उसमें या तो रहनेवाले लोग नहीं रहते या इमारत गर्क हो जाती है।
हो गई। उसके पाँव तले से शहर ही खिसक गया।
उसने माथे को छूकर देखा, कहीं उल्लू की आँखें उसके माथे पर तो नहीं आ लगीं। पुरानी यादों पर किवाड़ भिड़ा दो। अब वहाँ हमारे लिए कुछ नहीं है। हम उस भूगोल, इतिहास के बाहर हो चुके हैं।
उन दृश्यों को, उन यादों को झटक दो। अपने से परे फटक दो।
सो जाओ।
दादी ऐमनाबाद वाले फार्म पर थी। खेतों की राह भागी और आधी रात रोढ़ी साहिब गुरुद्वारे पहुँची।
छोटे चचा बलराज वहीं छूट गए थे। दर्द से उनकी टाँग जुड़ी थी। फार्म पर रखी बन्दूक उनके किसी काम न आ सकी। भीड़ फार्म की ओर बढ़ रही है। खबर पा मौलू ने चचा को चबारे से उतारा। बोरी में डाल अपने कंधे पर उठा लिया। सिर को खेस से ढँक अपनी झुग्गी में डाल आया। घरवाली चूल्हे के आगे बैठी रोटी-सालन पकाती रही और मौलू भीड़ के साथ लूट-मार में शामिल रहा। रात देर गए जब भीड़ तितर-बितर हो गई तो मौलू ने चचा का बोरा-बुचका कंधे पर डाला और खेतों के बीच से होकर रोढ़ी साहिब जा पहुँचा।
दादी ने मौलू को असीसें दीं और चाचा ने कमीज की जेब से रूमाल निकाल मौलू की ओर बन्दूक का लाइसेंस बढ़ा दिया—मौलू! अपना हाथ इधर करो और भंडारघर की यह लो तालियाँ—कौल करार समझो, आज से फार्म और घर तुम्हारा हुआ। बरखुरदार किसी और के हाथ में न जाने देना।
मौलू ने दादी को पैरीपौना बुलाया और अँधेरे में ओझल हो गया।
रज़मक से नीचे उतरे चाचा धनराज ने रावलपिंडी छोड़ी हवाई जहाज से। सपरिवार बचकर आए पर उन्हें अन्दर ही अन्दर महीनों गम खाता रहा कि उनके कालीन-गलीचे जो उन्होंने थामस कुक में जमा करवाए थे, वह उन्हें न मिल सकेंगे। जो कोई भी सुनता, उन्हें घूरता रहता। जिस दोजख से बचके आए हैं—मालूम नहीं बरखुरदार को कि हालात क्या थे। जलालपुर कीकना की द्रोपदा? अपने आप ही वहाँ रुक गई कि वैरियों ने घर में डाल ली!
लालामूसा वाले बड़े मामा अपने इकलौते बेटे का धुस्सा गले से लगाए उसे कैम्पों में ढूँढ़ते। हर पहचानवाले को पूछते—क्या देखा तुमने उसे गाड़ी में चढ़ते? किसी गलत गाड़ी में जा बैठा होगा।
किसी ने बूढ़े पर तरस खाकर कहा—एक गाड़ी लालामूसा से सरकी थी। उस लाश-मेल में तो एक धड़कन न बची थी।
क्या खबर, मौका लगते कहीं बीच में उतर गया हो।
अमृतसर वाले कैम्प में पड़े रहो भाई—किसी न किसी दिन बेटा आन मिलेगा।
बाहर कहीं कुत्ते भौंकने लगे थे।
गजर बजा—एक।
उसने उठकर मुँह पर पानी के छींटे दिये, खिड़की से बाहर झाँका और सिर पैताने की ओर कर सोने की कोशिश करने लगी।
आँखों के आसपास तैरती पतली-सी नींद में अचकचाकर चौंकी। कहीं कोई आहट है क्या?
कलाई पर घड़ी देखी। सुबह होने को है। सामने की खिड़की में जा खड़ी हुई। बाहर देखा। डूँगर के पीछे से हलके उजाले की लौ। दिन उघड़ रहा है, जैसे कोई पुरानी परिपाटी नई अँगड़ाई ले रही हो। अम्बर की निलाई और भूरी धरती की लुनाई अपनी-अपनी दिशा से एक-दूसरे की मन-मनौती कर रहे हैं। जो कुछ भी दीख रहा है प्राचीन है, शायद प्राचीनतम! यह धरती, वह सूरज और वह टेकरी। सूरज के उगते ही डूँगरों पर लहराने लगी धूप की उजली ओढ़नियाँ। दुबली-पतली पगडंडियों के ओर-छोर घिरने लगे, पेड़ों के झुंड चमकने लगे सूरज भगवान के प्रकाश से।
तुलना!
नहीं! तुलना क्यों करें।
भरपूर फसलोंवाले खेत। सदा-सदा हरियाती धरती। न कमी पानी की, न धूप की, न छाँह की। बस अब वह हमारा वतन नहीं। मत देखो उधर। रह-रहकर वहाँ की बात मत सोचो। अब इस मोड़ से पीछे नहीं, आगे देखने का समय है।
समय।
इस समय में खो गया है वह भूखंड, जिससे जुड़ा हमारा वजूद था। हमारी संज्ञा थी। उसे सियासत का भूचाल निगल गया है। जो ऊपर था वह नीचे आ गया है। जो नीचे था, उधर पछाड़ दिया गया है। अब हम सब उस सीमान्त के बाहर हैं, और वह सीमान्त हमारे बाहर है। उस अनहोनी को अपने चित्तपट से मिटा दो। जाती सरकार ने सजा दी हमें और आती सरकार ने हमीं से कर वसूली की।
हिन्दुस्तान जिन्दाबाद!
पाकिस्तान पायंदाबाद।
यह आवाजें गुम क्यों नहीं होतीं। शीशा पिघलता रहता है कानों में। आगे की ओर देखो। छोड़ दो उस सपने का पीछा जो पराए मुल्क में ओझल हो गया है।
दरवाजे पर किसी ने हाथ की थाप दी। उसने सतर्क हो ऐसे कदम भरे ज्यों भीड़ बाहर खड़ी हो!
—कौन!
—हुकुम मैं हूँ देवला। चाय पूछने आया हूँ।
ढीले से पग्गड़ में बारह-चौदह बरस का लड़का।
—चाय ला रहे हो तो ले आओ!
—हुकुम, प्याले में कड़क लाऊँ कि—
—नहीं-नहीं। चाय दूध, चीनी सब अलग।
—केतली में न?
—हाँ ले आओ।
उसने सिर हिला दिया—अच्छा बाई जी।
वह चाय के इन्तजार में कई देर बरामदे में टहलती रही।
देवला को आते न देख, अन्दर गई। शाल ओढ़ा और दरवाजा भिड़ा बाहर घूमने लगी। सामने देखा, हाथ में दूध का बर्तन लिये देवला चला आ रहा है।
—अभी तो दूध ही लाए हो, चाय कब तक मिलेगी?
वह हँस दिया।
—अभी रसोड़े में चूल्हा जला है, हुकुम।
अटपटा लगा।
—चाय जब तैयार नहीं थी तो इतनी जल्दी पूछने क्यों आ गए देवला?
सुमेर सिंह फूफा ने कहा था—पूछकर आ जाओ।
—सुमेर सिंह कौन हैं?
—रसोड़ा इंचार्ज।
उसने मन ही मन दर्ज किया। दिन की शुरुआत ही गलत, आगे-आगे देखो होता है क्या।
वह घूमने के लिए चौड़ी सड़क की ओर निकल गई।
चिडिय़ाँ चहचहाने लगी थीं। मन्दिरों में घंटे-घडिय़ाल बजने लगे थे। शहर की शोरीली लय धीमे-धीमे शहर की हवा में थिरकने लगी थी। सामने खुले विस्तार में खड़ी इमारत। कॉल्विन हाईस्कूल। कॉल्विन शायद कमिश्नर या रेजिडेंट रहे होंगे।
सड़क पर सलीके की धीमी रफ्तार में एक स्टूडीबेकर निकल गई। कार पर पताका थी। शायद राज-परिवार में से कोई।
कार के पहियों ने उसमें स्फूर्ति का संचार किया। गतिशील होना ही गतिवान होता है।
और तुम।
यहाँ पहुँचकर भी—उलटी दिशा की ओर देख रही हो।
जाने लगातार अनमनी क्यों हूँ।
चाय की इन्तजार में साढ़े आठ हो चुके थे। पुरानी रियासती घडिय़ाँ क्या इतना पीछे चला करती होंगी।
ठीक नौ बजे चाय की ट्रे के साथ देवला नमूदार हुआ। ट्रे मेज पर रखी और पूछा—नाश्ता कितने बजे?
उसने दिलचस्पी से देखा।
—नाश्ते में क्या मिल सकता है?
—दही पराँठा। आमलेट पराँठा।
—और
—चाय पराँठा।
—ठीक, दही पराँठा।
—कितने पराँठे लाऊँ।
—सिर्फ एक।
सूटकेस में से कपड़े निकाले तो दोचित्ती सी हो उठी। यहाँ क्या रास आएगा, नहीं मालूम। शायद अपने को बहुत परेशान कर रही हूँ। क्या फैसला करने की इच्छा कमजोर पड़ गई है या स्थितियों को पढऩेवाली दूरअन्देशी। हमारे हाथ में अब कुछ नहीं। पर तुम खुद तो हो अपने आप में। विज्ञापन तुमने अखबार में पढ़ा। देसाई अंकल से यहाँ के नए हालात जाने। उनके सुझाव पर सेक्रेटेरियट लायब्रेरी से गैजेटियर देखे। अब यहाँ रुकने और न रुकने को लेकर मन में दुविधा कैसी! यह अनमनापन क्यों? सूटकेस में से देसाई अंकल द्वारा दिया गया छोटा सा पैकेट निकाला। उस खत की कापी पर्स में रखी जो देसाई अंकल पहले ही दीवान साहिब को लिख चुके थे।
बाहर हार्न की आवाज थी। कहीं मेरे लिए तो नहीं!
ड्राइवर ने लिफाफा आगे किया—आपको लेने आया हूँ—दीवान साहिब नाश्ते पर आपका इन्तजार करेंगे!
हल्का महसूस किया यह सोचकर कि वह तैयार हो चुकी थी।
उसने जीप में बैठे पहली बार खुली आँखों शहर को देखा। अपने
को चेतावनी दी—हर शहर में लाहौर या दिल्ली ढूँढऩा कहाँ की समझदारी है!
