वरिष्ठ लेखक प्रियदर्शी ठाकुर ‘ख़याल’ का उपन्यास आया है ‘रानी रूपमती की आत्मकथा’। राजकमल प्रकाशन से प्रकाशित इस उपन्यास पर यह टिप्पणी लिखी है युवा कवयित्री रश्मि भारद्वाज ने। आप भी पढ़ सकते हैं-

मांडू का उल्लेख आते ही आँखों के आगे प्रेम, समर्पण और विद्रोह की एक कथा तिर आती है। एक पद्मिनी नायिका की कथा जो बेहतरीन कवि और संगीतकार भी थी, जिसके बुने गीत आज भी लोकमानस में रचे –बसे हुए हैं। एक अपूर्व सुंदरी जो अपनी विलक्षण कलाओं के कारण अपने जीवन काल में ही एक फंतासी बन गयी थी। उसने अगर स्वयं अपनी कथा बाँची हो तो उस कथा को भी उसकी तरह विलक्षण होना ही होगा।
‘रानी रूपमती की आत्मकथा’ के लेखक प्रियदर्शी ठाकुर ‘ख़याल’ कहते हैं, ‘आप मानें न मानें, यह वाक़ई रानी रूपमती की आत्मकथा है; उन्होंने लिखवाई है, मैंने लिख दी!’
कल्पना और इतिहास का व्यापक वितान
कथा में कल्पना और इतिहास का इतना अद्भुत सामंजस्य और प्रामाणिकता है कि लेखक का यह कथन वास्तविक ही प्रतीत होता है कि रानी रूपमती ने वाक़ई लेखक को निमित्त के रूप में चुना और स्वप्न में आकर अपनी कथा सुनाई। एक लेखक वैसे भी किसी पात्र को गुनता-लिखता हुआ, उसमें इतना एकाकार हो जाता है कि उसे जीने लगता है। वह पात्र उसकी क़लम से आगे बढ़कर उसके जीवन का हिस्सा हो जाता है और अपनी नियति स्वयं तय करने लगता है। सृजन के इन पलों में स्वप्न और वास्तविकता के बीच की सीमारेखा भी धूमिल पड़ जाती है। लेखक पर जिस तरह से अचानक रूपमती को पन्नों पर साकार करने की धुन चढ़ी थी कोई आश्चर्य नहीं कि बंद आंखों से भी उन्हें रानी की ही छवि दिखाई पड़ने लगी थी। लेखक ख़ुद को इस पुस्तक का श्रुतिलेखक बताते हैं। एक दिन सन्निपात जैसी मन:स्थिति में उन्होंने रानी रूपमती की कथा लिखने की ठान ली। इंटरनेट पर उपलब्ध सभी स्त्रोत पढ़ डाले और एल.एम.क्रम्प द्वारा अनुदित रानी की जीवनी – द लेडी ऑफ़ लोटस:रूपमती क्वीन ऑफ़ मांडू, ए स्ट्रेंज टेल ऑफ़ फेथफुलनेस’ भी खोजकर पढ़ डाली। बक़ौल लेखक उसके बाद भी उन्हें रानी की कथा को पुनः सृजित करने का रास्ता नहीं मिल रहा था। ऐसे में रानी ने स्वयं स्वप्न में आकर उन्हें अपनी कथा सुनाई। यही कारण है कि इस पुस्तक के अध्याय 81 साक्षात्कार की तरह दर्ज़ किए गए हैं जहाँ रानी स्वप्न के साक्षात्कार के माध्यम से स्वयं अपनी कथा कहती है और लेखक उन्हें पन्नों पर उतारता जाते हैं।
द लेडी ऑफ़ लोटस सोलहवीं शताब्दी में अहमद-उल-उमरी तुर्कमान द्वारा रूपमती की जीवनी का अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद है। आत्मकथा की शोध सामग्री के रूप में मूल रूप से यह पुस्तक है। इसके अतिरिक्त भी लेखक ने इस आत्मकथा को लिखते हुए कई संदर्भ ग्रथों का सहारा लिया है। विशद शोध और तथ्यात्मक कथासूत्र के कारण यदि इस पुस्तक को हम रानी रूपमती के जीवन के बारे में जानने के एक प्रामाणिक स्त्रोत के रूप में देखें तो कोई अतिशयोक्ति नहीं होगी। लेखक ने सिर्फ़ एक प्रेमकथा को ही नहीं जीवंत किया है, रानी रूपमती और बाज़ बहादुर के व्यक्तित्व को भी समग्रता से प्रस्तुत किया है। नेपथ्य में बहुत ही संजीदगी से बुना गया मध्ययुगीन राजनीतिक और सामाजिक स्पंदन इस साहित्यिक कृति को आने वाले समय में उल्लेखनीय ऐतिहासिक कृति की तरह सुरक्षित करने में सफल रहेगा।
ऐतिहासिक विषय पर लिखी गयी किसी भी रचना के सामने सबसे बड़ा संकट इतिहास और किंवदंती के घालमेल के बीच पात्रों की विश्वसनीयता को बनाए रखना होता है। रानी रूपमती और बाज़ जैसे ऐतिहासिक पात्र इतिहास से अधिक लोकमानस में अपनी छवि रच देते हैं और लोककथाओं, गीतों, जनश्रुतियों के माध्यम से घर घर बाँचे जाते हैं। रानी के ही जन्म और मृत्यु से सम्बंधित कई किंवदंतियां प्रचलित हैं। लोकमानस यह मानता है कि रानी रेवा नदी की पुत्री थी। ऐसे में रानी की कथा को जनश्रुतियों से निकालकर एक ऐतिहासिक पात्र के रूप में सृजित करना लेखक के लिए बड़ी चुनौती रहा होगा। एक तरफ़ देवी की तरह प्रतिष्ठित भव्य आलौकिक चरित्र और एक तरफ़ एक महत्वपूर्ण ऐतिहासिक पात्र, जिसने मध्ययुगीन सामाजिक, राजनीतिक और सांस्कृतिक परिदृश्य में ज़रूरी दख़ल दिया और आज भी अपने त्याग, प्रेम और कलात्मकता के कारण उतनी ही प्रासंगिक है। लेखक ने रानी की दोनों ही छवियों के साथ न्याय किया है और एक ऐसा पात्र सृजित किया है जो समकालीन संदर्भों में भी लीक से हटकर चलने वाली एक सशक्त स्त्री पात्र के रूप में याद रखी जायेगी।
इतिहास को साहित्य में जीवंत करने में एक ख़तरा पुस्तक के बोझिल हो जाने का भी रहता है। तिथियों, घटनाओं, पात्रों के घटाटोप में साहित्य की जीवंतता और रचनात्मकता कहीं खो भी सकती है। इस उपन्यास का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण पक्ष है प्रकृति, परिवेश और तत्कालीन वास्तु शिल्प का सजीव वर्णन। लेखक ने मालवा की प्राकृतिक संपदा का इतना जीवंत वर्णन किया है कि पूरा परिवेश आँखों के आगे साकार हो जाता है और यह बात आश्चर्यजनक लगती है कि लेखक ने ख़ुद कभी इस प्रदेश की यात्रा नहीं की।
एक बानगी देखिए:
चारों दिशाओं में हरीतिमा का समुद्र लहराता था। हवेली से उत्तर झरोखों से सीधे खाई में गिरती पत्थर की प्राकृतिक दीवार के नीचे अर्द्धचंद्राकार रेशम के पाढ़ सी शुभ्र रेवा मैया की कलकल करती तीव्र धारा हल्की ढलान वाली पहाड़ियों के सहारे पच्छिम की ओर चली जाती थी।
इसी तरह बाज़ और रूपमती की पहली मिलनस्थली अधपदम तलाओ अर्थात अर्धपद्म ताल के नैसर्गिक सौंदर्य का इतना विलक्षण वर्णन है कि एक अद्भुत तालाब की छवि आँखों के आगे साकार हो उठती है जहां आधे हिस्से में कमल के सैकड़ों फूल खिले हैं और दूसरे हिस्से के नीलछांह हरे पारदर्शी जल में एक भी फूल नहीं है। वहीं होशंग शाह की बनाई एक भग्न छतरी में बीण बजाती एक लावण्यमयी किशोरी और तम्बूरे पर संगत देता सुदर्शन बाज़ बैठा दिखाई देता है। अर्द्धपद्म ताल मालवा का एक छोटा सा स्वर्ग था जिसका उतना ही कवित्तमय वर्णन उपन्यास में किया गया है कि अब लुप्त हो चुकी इस स्थली को साकार देखने की तीव्र उत्कंठा से पाठक बच नहीं सकते।
उपन्यास का दूसरा प्रबल पक्ष है इसकी भाषा। हर पात्र अपने परिवेश और मूल स्थान के अनुरुप भाषा का उपयोग करते हैं। रानी संस्कृतनिष्ठ हिंदी बोलतीं हैं लेकिन मुस्लिम परिवेश में शामिल होने के बाद उनके शब्दकोश में उर्दू, फ़ारसी के शब्द जुड़ जाते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त भी स्थान के अनुरूप पात्र राजस्थानी, हिंदी यहाँ तक कि भोजपुरी भी बोलते हैं। भाषा का इतना प्रभावी प्रयोग परिवेश की विश्वसनीयता को बढ़ाता है।
विभिन्न पृष्ठभूमि के पात्रों को कथासूत्र में पिरोकर लेखक ने मध्ययुगीन इतिहास की समग्रता से पड़ताल करने की कोशिश की है। उपन्यास का एक प्रमुख पात्र पंडीज्जू जिनका रानी की सांस्कृतिक, आध्यात्मिक परवरिश में विशेष योगदान हैं, मिथिला से निर्वासित हैं। पंडित जी के काल्पनिक पात्र बहाने तत्कालीन बंगाल, बिहार और मालवा के संबंधों को रेखांकित करने का प्रयास किया गया है। उसी प्रकार बाज़ बहादुर की अफ्रीकी मूल की विश्वासपात्र दासी नायला तत्कालीन भारत के अफ़्रीकी देशों से व्यापारिक संबंधों की पुष्टि करती है। रूपमती की बचपन की सखी राजस्थानी मूल की तारा की अपहरण की कथा और उसके अचानक एक दिन प्रकट हो जाने द्वारा लेखक ने तत्कालीन समय और समाज को समझने के कई संकेत दिए हैं।
स्त्रियों की दयनीय स्थिति
मध्यकालीन भारत में स्त्रियों की स्थिति, उनपर धर्म परिवर्तन का दबाव, मुस्लिम आक्रमणकारियों द्वारा उन्हें अपने हरम में रख लेने के कई हृदयविदारक प्रसंग लेखक ने उपन्यास में दर्ज किए हैं लेकिन साथ ही हिन्दू राजाओं की अवसरवादिता और कायरता भी स्पष्ट है। वास्तविकता तो यह है कि उस समय स्त्रियों की स्थिति क्रय विक्रय और भोग विलास की वस्तु से अधिक नहीं थी। जिसके पास शक्ति और सत्ता होती थी, वह स्त्रियों को अपनी संपत्ति की तरह इस्तेमाल करता था।
रूपमती के पिता यदुवीर सिंह का अपनी क्षत्राणी पत्नी रुक्मिणी से पहले प्रेम विवाह फिर अपनी जान बचाने के लिए उसे मालवा के सुल्तान शुजात खान को सौंपने की कथा एक स्त्री के निस्वार्थ प्रेम से छल की कथा है। यह यदुवीर को एक कापुरुष और अवसरवादी की तरह सामने लाती है। परभारों का प्रमुख वीर यदुवीर सिंह वेश्यालय में पली बढ़ी और बख्तावर खान द्वारा ज़बरन अपने हरम में डाली गई रूपमती की नानी गौरी उर्फ़ गौहर बाई की पुत्री रुकैया उर्फ़ रुक्मिणी के रूप सौन्दर्य पर फ़िदा होकर उससे विवाह करता है लेकिन अपना पतिधर्म नहीं निभा पाता। अपनी जान की रक्षा के लिए अपनी पत्नी को उपहार की तरह प्रस्तुत कर देता है। बेटी रूपमती को अगवा करके उसका अच्छी शिक्षा दीक्षा का इंतज़ाम करता है। लेकिन यही पिता जो अपनी पत्नी को एक मुस्लिम शासक को भेंट कर आया, पुत्री के मालवा सुल्तान बाज़ बहादुर के साथ प्रेम को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर पाता। यह उसे अपनी मर्यादा, कुल गौरव पर लगा एक दाग दिखता है और वह रूपमती को ज़हर देने का आदेश तक दे डालता है।
यदुवीर ने अपने घर में भी एक स्त्री और उसके भाई को दास बना कर रखा हुआ है। आरंभ में रूपमती के लिए नकारात्मक लगती वह स्त्री केतकी संकट के क्षणों में उससे बहनापे की डोर से बंधती है। उनका दुख उन्हें जोड़ देता है।
यदुवीर के साथ ही काम करने वाला रेवादिया रूपमती से बलात्कार की कोशिश भी करता है। यह सभी तथ्य इस बात का संकेत करते हैं कि स्त्री हमेशा से घर की चारदीवारी में भी असुरक्षित रही है और कुल मर्यादा के नाम पर उसकी बलि चढ़ाई ही जाती रही है।
प्रेम और समर्पण की महागाथा
किसी भी ऐतिहसिक, मिथकीय उपन्यास को समकालीनता की कसौटी पर भी खुद को साबित करना होता है। हिन्दू-मुस्लिम प्रेम और विवाह कभी आसान नहीं रहा। रानी रूपमती और बाज़ को भी इसके लिए घोर सामाजिक आलोचना और राजनैतिक संकट झेलना पड़ा। मध्ययुगीन कथा में तत्कालीन समय के प्रश्नों को समझने के कई सूत्र लेखक ने छोड़े हैं। धर्म निरपेक्षता, प्रेम का किसी भी धर्म पर हावी होना यहाँ पंक्ति –दर पंक्ति परिलक्षित है।
बाज़ अपनी हिन्दू रानी के स्वागत में ख़ुद जयघोष करता है। उसे धर्म परिवर्तन के लिए बाध्य नहीं करता है और परिसर में उसके लिए कृष्ण मंदिर और एक विशेष महल जहां से वह रेवा नदी के दर्शन कर सके, का प्रबंध करता है। इन सब इस्लाम विरोधी कृत्यों के लिए उसे मौलवियों का उग्र विरोध झेलना होता है जो उसे रानी के मोहपाश में बंधा एक नकारा शासक भी साबित कर देते हैं।
लेकिन कला को समर्पित बाज़ एक उदार चित्त मनुष्य है जिसके लिए प्रेम से सर्वोपरि कुछ नहीं।
वह कहता है, ‘कलाकारों की कद्र उनकी कला के मयार से होनी चाहिए, उनके हिन्दू या मुसलमान होने से नहीं’।
सुल्तान जो निरंकुश नहीं कला को समर्पित था
उदारमना बाज़ मूलतः एक कला प्रेमी व्यक्ति था। उसका मन कविता और संगीत में जितना रमता था उतना शासन की कूटनीतियों में नहीं। एक मनुष्य के तौर पर वह समृद्ध था लेकिन एक सुल्तान के रूप में नहीं। शेक्सपियर अपने पात्रों में जिस चारित्रिक दोष/ character flaw को अपने महानायकों के त्रासद अंत का कारण बताते हैं, यहाँ बाज़ का कला को समर्पित व्यक्तित्व ही यह कारण बना। अपनी गद्दी और अपना सिर बचाने के लिए भले ही उसने लोगों को मौत के घाट उतारा लेकिन सत्ता नियंत्रण के लिए कभी बहुत निरंकुश नहीं हो सका। हालाँकि लेखक उपन्यास में लगातार बाज़ के हर कृत्य के पक्ष में तर्क देते दृष्टिगत होते हैं क्योंकि वहाँ वह एक प्रेमिका की दृष्टि को ज्यों का त्यों दर्ज कर रहे होते हैं।
रानी उपन्यास में अपनी कथा के साथ बाज़ के व्यक्तित्व को भी बुनती जाती है। वह कहती हैं, ‘मेरे बाज़ को कायर न लिखिएगा’।
‘बाज़ सचमुच सख़्त जान था। मुझे याद कर कुहर –कुहर कर जिया, मगर जिया हमसे बीस बरस बाद तक और मरा भी तो यह कहकर कि मुझे मेरी रानी की समाधि के पास ही दफ़न करा दिया जाए, बादशाह ने करवा भी दिया’।
बाज़ बहादुर को बादशाह अकबर ने एक संगीतकर और कवि के रूप में अपने दरबार में स्थान दिया। अबुल फज़ल ‘अकबरनामा’ में लिखते हैं- ‘वह अपनी हिन्दी कविताओं में अपने प्रेम का आख्यान करते हुए ह्रदय चीर कर उड़ेल दिया करता था और अक्सर उसमें रूपमती का नाम समाविष्ट कर देता था’।
हालाँकि लेखक ने रानी के माध्यम से लगातार बाज़ को एक श्रेष्ठ प्रेमी के रूप में दर्शाया है लेकिन यदि समर्पण, त्याग और वीरता की बात आएगी तो रानी रूपमती उससे अधिक शक्तिशाली पात्र के रूप में उभरती हैं। उनका प्रेम बाज़ बहादुर से कहीं अधिक महान और त्यागपूर्ण परिलक्षित होता है जिसने उन दोनों का नाम इतिहास में हमेशा के लिए सुरक्षित किया।
जैसा बाज़ उपन्यास में कहता है, ‘मेरा और तुम्हारा यह प्रेम, यह अद्भुत गठजोड़ हज़ारों साल की उस नाइंसाफ़ी के खिलाफ़ बगावत ही तो है’।
आज भी धर्म के नाम पर प्रेम की बलि चढ़ाई जा रही है। विपरीत धर्मी प्रेमी जोड़े राजनैतिक शतरंज की बिसात का मोहरा बनाए जा रहे। ऐसे में रूपमती और बाज़ के उदार प्रेम की गाथा बाँचता यह उपन्यास मानवता के ज़ख़्म पर रखे रुई के फाहे सा प्रतीत होता है।
