शायर-गीतकार साहिर लुधियानवी की जयंती है. उनके एक दोस्त जोए अंसारी ने साहिर लुधियानवी पर यह संस्मरण लिखा था. जिसमें उनकी शायरी और जिंदगी के कई नुक्ते खुलते हैं. यह ‘शेष’ पत्रिका के नए अंक में प्रकाशित हुआ है. उसका सम्पादित रूप प्रस्तुत है- जानकी पुल.

बम्बई शहर के उबलते हुए बाज़ारों में, साहिलों पर, सस्ते होटलों में तीन लंबे-लंबे जवान बाल बढ़ाये, गिरेबान खोले आगे की फ़िक्र में फिकरे कसते, खाली जेबों में सिक्के बजाते घूमते फिरते थे. दो उत्तर से आये थे, एक दक्षिण से इस उम्मीद से कि वो दिन दूर नहीं जब खुद उनकी तकदीर के साथ फिल्म स्टूडियो के फाटक खुलेंगे और फिल्म इंडस्ट्री में अदब का सितारा चमकेगा.
हिंदुस्तान के बंटवारे से कोई साल भर पहले और तीन-चार साल बाद तक सेल्यूलाइड की दुनिया पर उदासी छाई रही. हर तरफ बदइन्तजामी और आपाधापी. वो दिन उगने में अभी देर थी. आखिर आखिर इब्राहीम जलीस, हमीद अख्तर और साहिर लुधियानवी, तीनों एक के बाद एक पाकिस्तान सिधार गए और तीनों ने आगे चलकर अपनी बिसात भर नाम कमाया.
मगर साहिर की रवानगी से चंद रोज पहले का एक मंज़र जो मुझे हजारों बार याद आ चुका है:
वाल्केश्वर रोड पर सज्जाद ज़हीर का मकान (जिसे कम्युनिस्ट ख्याल के बेघरों ने धर्मशाला बना रखा था), मुल्क में फसादात की हौलनाक ख़बरों पर रायजनी करते-करते हम लोग रात ढाले सो गए. हम में से एक बन्दा था जो नहीं सोया. बेकरार रहा. सुबह आँख खुली तो देखते हैं कि वो उलझे घने बालों में बार-बार कंघा फेर रहा है और आप ही आप बुदबुदा रहा है: मेरे पंजाब में आग लगी तो आसानी से नहीं बुझेगी, बड़ी बरबादी होगी.
ये साहिर लुधियानवी था. उसकी आँखें पंजाब में फसाद की आग के तसव्वुर से लाल थीं और नींद उस आग के अखबारी शोलों में जल चुकी थी.
एक बार बम्बई की तरफ अस्थायी वापसी हुई, फिर लुधियाना और वहां से लाहौर. वहीँ उसने पूछा:
चलो वो कुफ्र के घर से सलामत आ गए
खुदा की मुमलिकत में सोख्ताजनों पे क्या गुजरी.
साहिर को मुमलिकते-खुदादाद(पकिस्तान) में हुकूमत ने सियासी तौर पर नापसंदीदा, बल्कि शक भरा करार दिया. शायद वारंट ज़ारी हुआ और साहिर ख़ामोशी से देहली सरक आये.
साहिर देहली आये, तो वो मशगला साथ लाए. लिख-पढकर जीना चाहते थे, मगर उर्दू बाज़ार में ख़ाक उड़ रही थी. बाहर की सेल से मनीऑर्डर आये तो लेखक और प्रकाशक को रोटी नसीब हो. साहिर ने यहीं हाली पब्लिशिंग के मालिक से मिलकर ‘शाहराह’ नमक दोमाही मैग्जीन की बुनियाद डाली. ऐसा उम्दा तरक्कीपसंद रिसाला निकाला कि उससे पहले के सारे माह्नामे गर्द होकर रह गए. ‘शाहराह’ १९५० से १९६० तक निकला लेकिन साहिर ने कुछ समय बाद शाहराह में अपने एक असिस्टेंट और निहायत मेहनती और दिलनवाज़ शख्सियत प्रकाश पंडित को जमाया और बम्बई चले आये. बाज़ारों और दफ्तरों में भटकने के लिए नहीं बल्कि फ़िल्मी माहौल और अव्वल उसकी शर्त के साथ कबूल करने और फिर उससे अपने आपको कबूल करवाने के लिए. उन दिनों का एक वाकया खुद साहिर की जुबान से मैंने सुना था जो ज़माने की उथल-पुथल पर आज भी हंसाता है;
बम्बई आये तो फ़िल्मी दुनिया में जो अपने थे, पहले उनसे मिले कि कुछ काम मिले, आगे की राह मिले. शाहिद लतीफ़(इस्मत चुगताई के शौहर) के अच्छे दिन थे. मियां-बीवी की कमान चढ़ी हुई थी. बड़े शिष्ट, बड़े रौशन दिमाग और दोस्त नवाज़. साहिर का हाल जानने के बाद शाहिद लतीफ ने दिलदारी की और कहा, देखो साहिर, जब तक कहीं कुछ राह निकले, तुम शाम का खाना यहीं खा लिया करो, लेकिन गेट का मुआमला यह है कि फ़िल्मी गीत लिखना तुम्हारा काम नही. मैं अगर राज़ी भी हो जाऊँ तो प्रोडूयूसर, फाइनांसर का कैसे राज़ी करूँगा!
यूँ दर-ब-दर सवालों के जवाब लेते हुए आखिर उन्हें कॉलेज के ज़माने के, विभाजन के पहले के कुछ पंजाबी अहबाब मिल गए. शुरू शबाब और पंजाब ये दो रिश्ते ऐसे हैं कि जंगों के बाद भी दिलों के मिलन की खुफिया सुरंग बिछाए रखते हैं. इसलिए वह सुरंग काम आई. साहिर ने घर दुरुस्त किया- कृशन चन्दर ने उन्हें अपने बंगले का ऊपरी हिस्सा किराये पर दे दिया. घर पर मिलने-मिलाने का प्रोग्राम दुरुस्त किया. ज़ल्दी से एक कार खरीदी क्योंकि उसके बगैर प्रोड्यूसर, फायनांसर की नज़र में शायर की हैसियत ‘मुंशी लोग’ की रहती है, एस.डी. बर्मन का दिल हाथ में लिया. गाडी का स्टीयरिंग हाथ में लिया और गाडी चल निकली.
साहिर आये थे इस इरादे से कि फ़िल्मी खजाने से नाम, काम और दाम का बैंक लूटकर राहे-फरार इख्तियार करेंगे और फिर इस माले-गनीमत से उम्दा-सा अदबी रिसाला और पब्लिशिंग हाउस जमायेंगे. उनके सियासी शऊर, तेज दिमागी और दर्दमंद दिल तीनों को रुपये का नहीं कुछ कर दिखाने का अरमान था. कुछ कर दिखने के अरमान में गुरुदत्त और महेश कौल सरीखे ज़हीन और हमख्याल भी मिल गए. किसी को शुरू में गुमान भी नहीं गुज़रता कि जिस ज़मीन पर आदमी का जवान लहू और पसीना एक हो वो ज़मीन गीली हो जाती है. फिर जब उसमें फसल आने लगे तो उसे और भी सींचना पड़ता है. यहाँ तक कि ज़मीन दलदल की तरह पाँव पकड़ने लगती है. साहिर से पहले वालों का भी हश्र यही हुआ था और साहिर के लहू-पसीने से जो भरी-पूरी फसल आई, उसमें वो घुटनों-घुटनों धंस गए. यही उनकी मस्ती ने होशियारी की और सादगी में होशियारी दाखिल की. उन्होंने सेल्यूलाइड के लिए भी वही लिखना शुरू कर दिया जो कागज़ पर लिखते आये थे.
१९५१-५२ की बात है. एक दिन इत्तेफाक से फेमस स्टूडियो में मिल गए. फिक्रमंद थे. फ़िक्र या परेशानी उनके चेहरे पर कभी देखी नहीं थी. ताज्जुब हुआ. हस्बे-मामूल बोले, यार गीत के मुखड़े में फंसा हुआ हूँ. बात बन नहीं रही: ये रात, ये चांदनी फिर कहाँ

बात बनाने के लिए मैं भी उनके साथ बैठ गया क्योंकि तब तक मैं भी बेतकल्लुफ शेर कह लिया करता था. उनके साथ बैठ गया लेकिन बात और बिगड़ने लगी तो उनकी तरफ से हिम्मत अफजाई के बावजूद मुखड़े के साथ तनहा छोड़ कर चल दिया.
बस यही पांच-सात साल थे, दरवाज़ों पर अव्वल दस्तक देने और फिर दरवाज़े तोड़ने और और अंदर घुसकर सद्र बनकर बैठ जाने के. साहिर के नाम का सिक्का हो गया, तमगा बन गया जिसके एक तरफ साहिर का नाम और पोर्ट्रेट था और दूसरी तरफ उनके गीत.
उर्दू अदब की महफ़िल से सिर्फ तीन हस्तियाँ हैं जिन्हें आँखों देखते फ़िल्मी नग्मानिगारी ने थोड़े-से अरसे में अपनाया, सर-आँखों पर बिठाया और उनका हुक्म माना है: आरज़ू लखनवी, मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी और साहिर लुधियानवी…. साहिर को इनमें भी फौकीयत हासिल है.
अव्वल बम्बई में न्यू थियेटर्स, कलकत्ता के शालीन और बामकसद कारनामों का माहौल न था, दूसरे उर्दू का बाज़ार उतार पर था. साहिर ने उर्दू तरकीबों पर आग्रह करके इस माहौल को बदल दिया. तीसरे ये कि साहिर ने अपने जाने-पहचाने लहजे में पंजाबी टच के ताजादम लब्बो-लहजे के साथ न सिर्फ मकबूल आम और खास गीत लिखे, बल्कि फ़िल्मी गीत लिखने को सच्चे और प्रामाणिक शायर का काम मनवा दिया. शायर का मकाम इतना बुलंद किया कि वो मुजिक डायरेक्टर की गिरफ्त से निकल गया. कुछ ऐसा पेंच डाला कि पिछले पचास बरस के दौरान जितनी ज़िल्लत शायरी के फन की हो चुकी थी सबका हिसाब साफ हो गया. न सिर्फ ये कि म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर धुन बनाते वक्त साहिर का मुंह देखने लगे- बता तेरी रजा क्या है? बल्कि कुछ तो उसके अहसान तले आ गए और उसके गीतों से ही चमके. उनके घर आकर पूछ-पूछ कर धुनें बनाने लगे. अमीर खुसरो ने ने एक फारसी मुक्तक में किसी संगीतकार को जवाब दिया था कि मियां मुझे मौसिकी अख्तियार करने का मशविरा क्या देते हो, ये मौसिकी है जिसे अलफ़ाज़ की हाज़त है. शायर को मौसिकी की मुहताजी नहीं. साहिर ने इसे साबित कर दिखाया.
जब साहिर कबूले-आम की इंतिहा को पहुँच गए थे. १९६० और १९७० के दौरान और फिल्म इंडस्ट्री जो बॉक्स ऑफिस की ही पुजारी है, तो जैसी पुरसोज़, दर्दमंद, खुद्कलाम, कसक उनकी जाती जिंदगी, उनके अकेलेपन में रची-बसी थी… वो प्रसंशकों और जी हुजूरियों के रात-दिन के मजमों और महफ़िलों में आकर बेसुरी हो गई. तरह-तरह के लोग उनको घेरने लगे. शराबबंदी के बरसों में साहिर का फैज़ ज़ारी रहता था. सबल लगी थी, जो आये अदब से बैठे, साहिर के बड़प्पन, महानता के अफ़साने सुनाये, औरों के असली या फर्जी ऐब निकाले, लल्लो-चप्पो करे, खाने-पीने का मज़ा उठाये और अपनी राह लगे.
पैगम्बर शायद खुद को बचा ले जाते हों, किसी फनकार का यहाँ ठोकर खाना बिलकुल स्वाभाविक है. इस शहर में साहिर ने खास तरह के लोगों में बड़ी हैसियत हासिल कर ली. कुछ तो बाल-बच्चों समेत उसके यहाँ पड़े रहते. कुछ ने साहिर की-सी छड़े-छांट की जिंदगी अपना ली और यहीं पसर गए और कुछ साथियों ने सितम ये किया कि अपनी कला और रोजी की गाड़ी साहिर की नाज़ुकमिजाज़ कार के पीछे बाँध ली. धक्के तो लगने थे.
साहिर को दुनिया भर से बुलावे आते थे. मुल्क के बाहर वे इस खौफ से न गए कि सफर हवाई जहाज़ का होता था. जहाँ भी हवाई जहाज से जाने की बात आती वो वादा करके टाल जाते. जहाँ जाना ज़रूरी होता वहां एयर के बजाय कार इस्तेमाल करते. बिहार के अकाल के सिलसिले में तो उन्होंने हमख्याल कलाकारों की एक टीम के साथ हज़ारों किलोमीटर का दौरा कार से ही किया. हज़ारों शैदाई जगह-जगह उन्हें घेरते थे. कॉलेज के लड़के-लड़कियां जो दरअसल साहिर की जादूगरी से सही मुखातिब थे, जिनके कच्चे और मीठे दर्द साहिर के कलाम में अपना इज़हार पा चुके थे वो साहिर को देखते ही औरों को भूल जाते थे. एक बार मैंने टहोका लिया यो वे भड़क कर बोले, यहाँ क्या अंसारी साहब, किसी बड़े मजमे में देखिये कि नौजवान किस्से ऑटोग्राफ लेते हैं, आप जैसों से या मुझसे?
मेरी जुबान से निकला- साहिर साहब, दुआ कीजिये कि हिन्दुस्तान का तालीमी और जेहनी मेयार यहीं ठहरा रहे.
आपसी एहतराम और कद्रदानी ने कभी आप और साहब को तुम या तू तक नहीं जाने दिया था. उस दिन न जाने क्या बात थी कि वो तुम तक उतर आये.
अंदरूनी शराफत ने उन्हें दूसरे दिन टोका होगा. जनवरी, १९६९ में ग़ालिब दे पर हम औरंगाबाद हवाई जहाज से गए. मेरा सर्जिकल ऑपरेशन हुआ था. मुझे तकरीबन लिटाकर ले गए. दिन को आराम करने लेटे ही थे कि साहिर मुजिक डायरेक्टर खैयाम के साथ कर से आ पहुंचे. उनके लिए पहले से माकूल इंतज़ाम नहीं था. नाराज़ हो गए. मैंने कहा, मैं दिन में नहीं सोता, आप यहाँ इस कमरे में इस बिस्तर पर आ जाइये. आ तो गए मगर बिगड़े रहे.
शाम को इजलास में मेहमान बहुत देर से पहुंचे. इजलास टूल पकड़ गया. कॉलेज के कर्ता-धर्ता रफीक जकारिया और चीफ गेस्ट एस.बी. चौहान दोनों स्टेज से देख रहे थे कि मजमा नाराज़ है. उनकी कुव्वते-बर्दाश्त जवाब दे रही है. मेरा नाम पुकार दिया. मैंने कुछ तहरीर, कुछ तक़रीर से हाजिरीन को बहला लिया. उबलता हुआ मजमा शांत हो गया.
जलसे के बाद जब हमारे कमरे में कई मेहमान लब तार कर रहे थे, साहिर आ पहुंचे. आते ही ऊंचे सुरों में दाद दी. कहा, यार किसी में कोई कमाल हो तो छुप नहीं सकता. देख लिया आज और हाँ, मैं इसलिये आ गया कि नज़्म कही थी. तीन-चार मिसरे नहीं जम रहे हैं. ज़रा राय तो दीजिए अभी पढनी है… राय-वाय तो क्या देनी थी. असल में वो उस पुरानी वक्ती रंजिश को धो डालना चाहते थे. यही हुआ. जब नज़्म सुनाकर बैठे तो मेरी तरफ झुककर बोले, आप ही के मिसरों पर ज्यादा दाद मिली है. अब तो खुश? मैं इतना बेवकूफ नहीं था कि मिसरों को अपना समझकर फूल जाता. वो भी तो साहिर के ही थे. मैंने तो सिर्फ दाया का काम किया था. अलबत्ता साहिर के इस बर्ताव ने मन मोह लिया.
ये मनमोहक जब दिल और गुर्दों के मरज़ का शिकार हुआ तो उतना भी न घबराया जितना हवाई जहाज के परवाज़ से. दिल उनका बारहवीं क्लास के ज़माने से ही मरज़ पकड़ चुका था और इस मरज़ की पहचान शायरा अमृता प्रीतम कर चुकी हैं. उन्होंने वो लिखा जो शायद ही कोई हिन्दुस्तानी औरत लिख सके, मगर नुस्खा न लिखा, अच्छा ही किया.
साहिर ने शायरी और उदारता के अलावा जिंदा रहने के और कौन-कौन से जतन किये मालूम नहीं, लेकिन वे मौत से खौफज़दा नहीं हुए. यहाँ तक कि मौत ने भी उनसे बराबर का व्यवहार किया. अचानक उठा ले गई. गली-गली साहिर का नाम इतना गूंजा हुआ है कि यकीन नहीं आता कि साहिर को सिधारे इतने साल हो गए.
