यह फैज़ अहमद फैज़ की जन्मशताब्दी का साल है. इस अवसर पर हिंदी के मशहूर लेखक असगर वजाहत ने यह लेख लिखा है, जिसमें उन्होंने फैज़ की शायरी और उनकी उस छवि को याद किया है जिसके कारण फैज़ को इस उप-महाद्वीप का सबसे बड़ा शायर माना जाता था. ‘नया पथ’ के फैज़ अंक में प्रकाशित यह दिलचस्प लेख आपके लिए- जानकी पुल.
मेरी उर्दू भाषा और साहित्य की पढ़ाई किसी तमीज और सलीके से नहीं हुई. पैदा तो आज़ादी मिलने से पहले हो गया था स्कूल जाना शुरू किया आज़ादी के बाद. यह वह ज़माना था जब उर्दू को देश निकाला दिया जा रहा था और स्कूलों में, खासकर सरकारी स्कूलों में उर्दू की पढ़ाई बंद हो गई थी. शायद यह मान लिया गया था कि सभी मुसलमान पाकिस्तान चले गए हैं और वहां उर्दू पढ़ रहे होंगे. लेकिन ऐसा नहीं था. हमारा परिवार तो एक छोटे शहर की परिधि पर पिछले सौ साल से जहाँ बसा हुआ था वहां से टस का मस नहीं हुआ था लेकिन उर्दू खिसककर पाकिस्तान जा चुकी थी. हाँ, घर का माहौल उर्दू-फ़ारसी वाला माहौल था. हमारे दादा अपने समय की सामान्य सांस्कृतिक आवश्यकता के अनुसार शायर थे और ‘जोश’ तखल्लुस करते थे. कोई पाठक जोश से मतलब जोश मलीहाबादी न निकाले. उस ज़माने और भी कई शायरों का एक तखल्लुस हो सकता है. हमारी अम्मा उर्दू के क्लासिकल साहित्य ‘फ़साना-ए-आज़ाद’, ‘तिलिस्म-ए-होशरुबा’ आदि की रसिया थीं. शेरो-शायरी में भी उन्हें वाजबी-वाजबी दिलचस्पी थी. घर में फुफियाँ उर्दू की पत्रिका ‘खातूने मशरिक’ और ‘बीसवीं सदी’ ‘शाम’ और बाद में ‘जासूसी दुनिया’ और ‘रूमानी दुनिया’ मंगाती थी. मुझे बचपन में ‘जासूसी दुनिया’ सुनने का शौक था. उर्दू नहीं आती थी लेकिन ‘अलिफ़’ ‘बे’ वगैरह पहचान लेता था. क्योंकि कुरआन शरीफ’ पढवाने के सिलसिले में यह पढाया गया था. बहरहाल, होता यह था कि किसी के पास मुझे ‘जासूसी दुनिया’ सुनाने का समय नहीं होता था तो मैं खुद टटोल-टटोल कर पढ़ने की कोशिश करता था और इसमें थोड़ी-बहुत कामयाबी भी मिल जाती थी. ये पूरी दास्तान इसलिए सुना रहा हूँ कि इसी पृष्ठभूमि से मैंने पहली बार फैज़ को पढ़ा था.
पता नहीं क्या चक्कर था कि हमारे शहर के सरकारी स्कूल में जहाँ मैं और मेरा भाई हाईस्कूल कर रहे थे वहां नौवें दर्जे तक उर्दू नहीं पढ़ाई जाती थी. लेकिन बोर्ड की परीक्षा यानी दसवीं क्लास में उर्दू पढ़ाई जाती थी. हमलोग यानी मै, मेरा भाई और क्लास के एक-दो और मुसलमान लड़के जब दसवीं में आये तो हमसे मिलने एक उर्दू के बुजुर्ग टीचर आये. अब उनका नाम तो याद नहीं पर बड़ा नूरानी चेहरा था. रंग अच्छा-खासा गहरा था. चेहरे पर सफ़ेद घनेरी दाढ़ी थी. नाक नक्शा खड़ा था. दोहरे बदन के आदमी थे. बुज़ुर्ग टीचर ने कहा कि तुम लोगों यानी मुसलमान लड़कों ने उर्दू नहीं ली तो मेरी नौकरी चली जायेगी. हमने मौलाना को अपनी मजबूरी बताई कि हमने तो उर्दू पढ़ी ही नहीं है तो वे बोले कि मैं तुम लोगों को अलिफ़, बे से पढ़ा दूंगा. कोई फेल नहीं होगा. और हुआ भी यही. बहरहाल, तब उर्दू आ गई.
अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम विश्वविद्यालय में साइंस के विषय को लेकर दाखिला दिलवाया गया तो उर्दू फिर गायब हो गई. पर अलीगढ़ में उन दिनों शेरो-अदब का माहौल था. फैज़ अहमद फैज़ का नाम सुना और कुछ मीर तकी मीर जैसा ध्वनित हुआ. लगा यार ये फैज़ अहमद फैज़ मीर तकी मीर के ज़माने के शायर मालूम होते हैं. कई महीनों तक मैं यही समझता रहा. किसी से पूछा भी नहीं. डरता था कि लोग हँसने लगेंगे. इसी दौरान मुझे फैज़ के संग्रह ‘दस्ते-सबा’ की एक कॉपी मिल गई. उस ज़माने में, रात के उन घंटों को छोड़ जब मैं सोता था बाकी वक्त मित्र मुज़फ्फर अली के साथ गुजरता था. हम दोनों ने दस्ते-सबा साथ-साथ पढनी शुरू की और हमारे ऊपर उसका जादू जैसा असर हुआ. हॉस्टल के कमरे में, क्लास रूम में, चांदनी रातों को पार्कों में टहलते हुए हम फैज़ के शेर पढ़ा करते थे. उनके कतए, उनकी नज्में गुनगुनाया करते थे. फैज़ हमारे वजूद का हिस्सा बन गए थे. और हमें लगता था हमारा नया जन्म हो रहा है. फैज़ की शायरी के मूल्य और स्थापनाएं हमें बहुत अच्छी और अपनी लगती थीं और हम उन्हें स्वीकार कर चुके थे. उसी ज़माने में उर्दू के लोगों से फैज़ के व्यक्तित्व के बारे में पता चला. यह भी बड़ा रोमांचक और ‘हीरोइक’ प्रतीत हुआ. फैज़ सेना में कैप्टन थे, फैज़ लाहौर षड्यंत्र केस में फांसी पर चढ़ाये जाने वाले थे. फैज़ की पत्नी अंग्रेज हैं, फैज़ अंग्रेजी के प्रोफ़ेसर रह चुके हैं. फैज़ को पाकिस्तान से जिलावतन कर दिया गया है. फैज़ लंदन/ मॉस्को, बेरुत वगैरह में रहा करते हैं.
फैज़ के ज़रिये मैं प्रगतिशील आंदोलन के पास आया. और मुज़फ्फर अली ने तो फैज़ पर बहुत काम किया. फैज़ से उनकी मित्रता भी हो गई थी. फैज़ ने उन्हें अपनी शायरी अपनी फिल्मों में इस्तेमाल करने के अधिकार भी दिए थे. लेकिन मेरा फैज़ से कोई निजी य व्यक्तिगत रिश्ता नहीं बन पाया या मैंने बनाना नहीं चाहा. इसके भी कई कारण थे.
दिल्ली में आकार जामिया में नौकरी कर ली. इस दौरान दिनमान के लिए लगातार लिखता था और रघुवीर सहाय से बराबर मुलाक़ात रहती थी. उन्हीं दिनों फैज़ के नए संग्रह ‘दस्ते तहे संग’ को दिल्ली के किसी प्रकाशक ने वैसे ही छाप दिया था. यह कॉपीराईट ‘पाइरेसी’ का मामला था. मैंने सहाय जी को बताया तो उन्होंने कहा इसी बहाने फैज़ पर कुछ लिख दीजिए. मैंने ‘पाइरेसी’ से ‘राइट अप’ शुरू किया और फैज़ की कविता के सरोकार तथा उपलब्धियों की चर्चा की. इस ‘राइट अप’ का शीर्षक फैज़ की एक कविता की पंक्ति से लिया था- ‘मेरा सरमाया यही हाथ तो हैं’. यह दिनमान में छपा था. इसकी प्रति मेरे पास नहीं है.
प्रगतिशील आंदोलन के प्रवर्तक सज्जाद ज़हीर की सन १९७३ में हार्टफेल से मृत्यु हो गई थी. वे उन दिनों किसी मीटिंग में आल्माआता गए हुए थे. जहाँ फैज़ भी थे. खबर यह मिली कि सज्जाद ज़हीर की डेडबाडी के साथ फैज़ दिल्ली आ रहे हैं. भारत सरकार ने विशेष रूप से फैज़ को भारत आने का वीजा दे दिया है. सज्जाद ज़हीर को जामिया के कब्रिस्तान में दफन किया गया. वहां मैंने फैज़ को पहली बार देखा. उन्हें देखना एक रोमांचक अनुभव था. जिस शायर के साथ आपने इतना वक्त गुज़ारा हो उसे साक्षात देखना एक बड़ी कल्पना और आकांक्षा के पूरा होने जैसा था. फैज़ के चेहरे पर जो भाव थे, उनका जो अंदाज़ था, उनकी जो सादगी थी, मैं सब देखता रहा, लेकिन उनसे मिला नहीं. अगर मैं अजमल अजमली या अमीर आरफी या मोहम्मद हसन से कहता तो वे मुझे फैज़ से मिलवा सकते थे. पर मैंने किसी से कहा नहीं.
क्यों? पहली बात तो यह कि जीवन भर मैं मशहूर, बड़े, विख्यात, नामी लोगों से मिलने में हिचकिचाता रहा हूँ बल्कि नहीं मिलना चाहता. क्यों? कह नहीं सकता. शायद डर…भय…लेकिन क्यों? किसका डर? य नए आदमी, वह भी विख्यात आदमी का दबाव और फिर मिल पाने के बाद की निरर्थकता. मतलब ज़ाहिर है अगर फैज़ से मुझे मिलवाता तो क्या होता? फैज़ हाथ मिला लेते. मुस्कुरा देते. हद से हद यह कि मुझे गले लगा लेते. तब? क्या उससे कुछ होता? वैसे बड़े लोगों से संबंध बनाना और उन्हें किसी पक्ष में मोड देना मेरे लिए अब भी बहुत मुश्किल है. फैज़ को दस मिनट देखता रहा था. फैज़ की पूरी शायरी उनके चेहरे पर खुदी हुई दिखाई पड़ी. मैं इससे बहुत खुश था कि फैज़ को देख लिया है.
फैज़ ऐसे कम शायरों में है जिनका ग्राफ ऊपर ही जाता है. ‘दस्ते सबा’ से लेकर आखिरी संग्रह ‘सरे वादिये सीना’ तक फैज़ में ज़बरदस्त जज्बा है. यह फैज़ की ईमानदारी और बड़ी ईमानदारी है कि उन्होंने समाजवादी सत्ता के बिखरते, टूटते दुःख को भी अपनी कविता का विषय बनाया है.
मूलतः पंजाबी भाषी फैज़ अरबी और फ़ारसी के अच्छे जानकार थे. वे अपनी उर्दू कविता को ऊंची काव्यात्मकता देने के लिए फारसी और अरबी से शक्ति ग्रहण करते थे. बहरहाल, चाहे जो हो, फैज़ पूर्वी देशों के महान कवियों की उस परम्परा से आते हैं जो शताब्दियों तक इंसान के दिलों और दिमागों को गरमाते रहते हैं.
