खलीलुर्रहमान आज़मी मशहूर शायर शहरयार के उस्तादों में थे. इस जदीदियत के इस शायर के बारे में शहरयार ने लिखा है कि १९५० के बाद की उर्दू गज़ल के वे इमाम थे. उनके मरने के ३२ साल बाद उनकी ग़ज़लों का संग्रह हिंदी में आया है और उसका संपादन खुद शहरयार ने किया है. उसी संग्रह ‘जंज़ीर आंसुओं की’ से कुछ गज़लें- जानकी पुल.

कोई तुम जैसा था, ऐसा ही कोई चेहरा था
याद आता है कि इक ख्वाब कहीं देखा था.
रात जब देर तलक चांद नहीं निकला था
मेरी ही तरह से ये साया मेरा तनहा था.
जाने क्या सोच के तुमने मेरा दिल फेर दिया
मेरे प्यारे, इसी मिटटी में मेरा सोना था.
वो भी कम बख्त ज़माने की हवा ले के गई
मेरी आँखों में मेरी मय का जो इक कतरा था.
तू न जागा, मगर ऐ दिल, तेरे दरवाज़े पर
ऐसा लगता है कोई पिछले पहर आया था.
तेरी दीवार का साया न खफा हो मुझसे
राह चलते यूं ही कुछ देर को आ बैठा था.
ऐ शबे-गम, मुझे ख़्वाबों में सही, दिखला दे
मेरा सूरज तेरी वादी में कहीं डूबा था.
इक मेरी आँख ही शबनम से सराबोर रही
सुब्ह को वर्ना हर इक फूल का मुँह सूखा था.

वो हुस्न जिसको देख के कुछ भी कहा न जाए
दिल की लगी उसी से कहे बिन रहा न जाए.
क्या जाने कब से दिल में है अपने बसा हुआ
ऐसा नगर कि जिसमें कोई रास्ता न जाए.
दामन रफू करो कि बहुत तेज है हवा
दिल का चिराग फिर कोई आकर बुझा न जाए.
नाज़ुक बहुत है रिश्तए-दिल तेज मत चलो
देखो तुम्हारे हाथ से यह सिलसिला न जाए.
इक वो भी हैं कि गैर का बुनते हैं जो कफ़न
इक हम कि अपना चाक गिरेबाँ सिया न जाए.

दिल की रह जाए न दिल में, ये कहानी कह लो
चाहे दो हर्फ़ लिखो, चाहे ज़बानी कह लो.
मैंने मरने की दुआ मांगी, वो पूरी न हुई
बस इसी को मेरे मरने की निशानी कह लो.
तुमसे कहने की न थी बात मगर कह बैठा
बस इसी को मेरी तबियत की रवानी कह लो.
वही इक किस्सा ज़माने को मेरा याद आया
वही इक बात जिसे आज पुरानी कह लो.
हम पे जो गुजरी है, बस उसको रकम करते हैं
आप बीती कहो या मर्सिया ख्वानी कह लो.

हर-हर सांस नई खुशबू की इक आहट सी पाता है
इक-इक लम्हा अपने हाथ से जैसे निकला जाता है.
दिन ढलने पर नस-नस में जब गर्द-सी जमने लगती है
कोई आकर मेरे लहू में फिर मुझको नहलाता है.
सारी-सारी रात जले है जो अपनी तन्हाई में
उनकी आग में सुब्ह का सूरज अपना दिया जलाता है.
मैं तो घर में अपने आप से बातें करने बैठा था
अनदेखा सा इक चेहरा दीवार पे उभरा आता है.
कितने सवाल हैं अब भी ऐसे, जिनका कोई जवाब नहीं
पूछनेवाला पूछ के उनको अपना दिल बहलाता है.
