बिरेन्द्र नाथ सरकार द्वारा स्थापित ‘ न्यु थियेटर्स’ की कहानी ग्रीक अख्यानो के ‘फ़ीनिक्स पक्षी’ से मेल खाती है| फ़ीनिक्स के बारे मे ‘ राख की ढेर से फ़िर से खडा उठने’ की कथा प्रचलित है| न्यु थियेटर्स का उदभव एवं विकास समकालीन फ़िल्म कम्पनियों की तुलना मे मर कर फ़िर जीने जैसा रहा। एक बार भीषण आग से लगभग खाक हो चुकी कम्पनी का कारवाँ मिश्रित अनुभवों के साथ लम्बे सफ़र पर निकला| इस दरम्यान कम्पनी ने 150 से अधिक फ़ीचर फ़िल्मो का निर्माण किया |
न्यु थियेटर्स ने भारतीय सिनेमा को कुंदन लाल सहगल, देवकी बोस ,नितिन बोस, प्रथमेश बरुआ, पंकज मलिक, बिमल रॉय, फ़णी मजुमदार, रायचन्द्र बोराल, कानन देवी, जमुना, लीला देसाई और पहाडी सान्याल जैसी उल्लेखनीय और महत्त्वपूर्ण कलाकारों की परम्परा दी| इन कलाकारों ने यहां से राष्ट्रीय एवं अंतराष्ट्रीय पहचान बनाने की दिशा मे एक कदम उठाया, अपने प्रतिभा को निखारा और संवारा। देवकी बोस न्यु थियेटर्स के एक सफ़ल निर्देशक रहे, उनके निर्देशन मे बनी चंडीदास, पुरन भगत, सीता और विद्यापति जैसी फ़िल्मो ने खूब नाम कमाया| गौरतलब है कि देवकी बोस की ‘सीता’ ‘वेनिस फ़िल्म समारोह’ मे प्रदर्शित की जाने वाली पहली भारतीय फ़िल्म है| देवकी बोस के निर्देशन मे बनी ‘चंडीदास’ के हिन्दी पेशकश को ‘नितिन बोस’ ने कुंदन लाल सहगल,उमा शशि,पहाडी सान्याल के साथ प्रस्तुत किया।
न्यु थियेटर्स से जुडे कलाकार समकालीन सामाजिक- सांस्कृतिक आंदोलनों मे सक्रिय रहे, कंपनी प्रगतिशील लेखक संघ और मार्क्सवादी विचारधारा से प्रभावित रही| फ़िल्मकार नितिन बोस की समाज सुधी सक्रियता से न्यु थियेटर्स को उनमे एक जुझारू फ़िल्मकार दिया , इसका प्रभाव ‘चंडीदास’ और बाद की सहगल अभिनीत फ़िल्म ‘प्रेसीडेंट’ और ‘धरती माता’मे देखा गया| प्रेसीडेंट की कहानी कारखानों मे काम करने वाले मज़दुरो के जीवन पर आधारित थी जबकि ‘धरती माता’ ने खेत-खलिहान-किसान को विषय बनाया| अभिनेताओं मे सहगल न्यु थियेटर्स के लिए सबसे सफ़ल साबित हुए, सहगल की बहुत सी यादगार फ़िल्में इसी कम्पनी केबैनर तली बनी|
तीस और चालीस दशक के महान गायक-अभिनेता सहगल (कुंदन लाल सहगल) ‘गम दिए मुस्तक़िल’ एवं दुख के अब दिन’ जैसे दर्द भरे गीतों के प्रतिनिधि से थे। इस विशेषता के साथ सहगल की झोली में अनेक रंगदेखने को मिले हैं। एक स्रोत के अनुसार सहगल का जन्म 4 अप्रैल 1904 को जम्मू के नवां शहर में हुआ, जबकि एक अन्य स्रोत 11 अप्रैल को सहगल की जन्मतिथि कहता है । पहले स्रोत को मानकर सहगल की स्मृतिमें यह विवेचना प्रस्तुत की है । बचपन के दिनों से ही सहगल को संगीत ने काफी प्रभावित किया, स्कूल जाने की उम्र में रामलीला के कीर्तन सुनने जाते थे ।फिर जम्मू के सुफी संत सलामत युसुफ से खूब लगाव रहा।जब बडे हुए तो पढने-लिखने के बाद रोजगार की तालाश में शिमला(हिमाचल प्रदेश), मोरादाबाद(उत्तर प्रदेश), कानपुर(उत्तर प्रदेश),दिल्ली और कलकत्ता जाने का मौका मिला । पहली नौकरी कलकत्ता में ‘सेल्समैन’की मिली,लेकिन हम जानते हैं कि यह उनकी मंजिल नहीं थी, एक दिन किसी तरह न्यु थियेटर्स और बीरेन्द्र नाथ सरकार के संपर्क मे आए।

बी एन सरकार सहगल की प्रतिभा के कायल रहे, पहला ब्रेक ‘मोहब्बत के आंसू’(1932) यहीं मिला । इस तरह कहा जा सकता है कि ‘सहगल’ न्यु थियेटर्स की खोज थे ।सहगल की पहली तीन फिल्में ‘मोहब्बत के आंसू,सुबह का सितारा और ज़िंदा लाश’ कुछ खास कमाल नहीं दिखा पाई, लेकिन बी एन सरकार ने हिम्मत कायम रखी और चंडीदास(1934) में सहगल को एक बार फिर मौका दिया । चंडीदास की कामयाबी ने उन्हेंरातो-रात बडा सितारा बना दिया ,जिसकी गूंज निकट भविष्य मे रिलीज फिल्म ‘यहूदी की लडकी’ और बाद की फिल्मो मे सुनी गई । संगीत एवं अभिनय की समझ न्यु थियेटर्स के सान्निधय में निखर कर व्यक्तित्वका हिस्सा बनी,जहां उस समय रायचंद बोराल,तिमिर बारन,पंकज मल्लिक जैसी प्रतिभाओं का जमावडा था। पी सी बरुआ भी उस समय कंपनी के में काम कर रहे थे, पुर्वोत्तर से आए बरुआ ने शरत चन्द्र की रचना‘देवदास’ का बांग्ला एवं हिन्दी में फिल्मांतरण किया । बांग्ला संस्करण में शीर्षक किरदार स्वयं बरुआ ने अदा किया,जबकि हिन्दी रुपांतरण में सहगल देवदास बने । न्यु थियेटर्स ने ज्यादातर बांग्ला व हिन्दी फिल्मेंबनायीं, सहगल अभिनीत ‘देवदास’ एवं ‘स्ट्रीट सिंगर’ को उन्होने बांग्ला के बाद हिंदी में भी बनाया । बरुआ के निर्देशन मे न्यु थियेटर्स के बैनर तले बनी देवदास( 1935) कंपनी की सबसे उल्लेखनीय फ़िल्मो मे मानीजाती है |बरुआ ने ‘देवदास’ को बांग्ला और हिन्दी भाषाओ मे बना कर इतिहास रच दिया| | देवदास के अतिरिक्त मुक्ति, अधिकार ,ज़िंदगी और शरत चन्द्र की रचना पर बनी ‘मंजिल’ बरुआ की न्यु थियेटर्स के लिएउल्लेखनीय फ़िल्मे रहीं । देवदास के दो संस्करण से पी.सी बरुआ एवं सहगल शोहरत को बुलन्दियों पर पहुंच गए थे । न्यु थियेटर्स की ‘देवदास’ से बिमल राय को भी प्रेरणा मिली |
न्यु थियेटर्स के संस्थापक श्री बिरेन्द्र नाथ सिनेमा में आने से पहले एक सिविल इंजीनियर थे जो बाद में फिल्मों से जुड़े और सामाजिक यथार्थ के सपनों को सिनेमा के माध्यम से पूरा किया । बिरेन्द्र नाथ की दूरदर्शिता,नेतृत्व क्षमता और प्रतिभा के बल पर आरंभिक भारतीय सिनेमा विकास सफ़र पर मजबूती से चला । उनके द्वारा स्थापित न्यु थियेटर्स ने दर्शकों की अनेक पीढियों को आकर्षित किया, कंपनी के सिने संसार ने लोगोंको शिक्षित किया , सामाजिक उत्तरदायित्त्व के साथ स्वस्थ मनोरंजन दिया ।कंपनी का रुझान समाज को दिशावान मनोरंजन देना था, निर्माण पक्ष को सशक्त करने लिए साहित्य पर बडा विश्वास दिखाया। कंपनी केरचनात्मक दायित्त्वों को पूरा करने के क्रम में ‘बांग्ला साहित्य’ को फ़िल्मो का आधार बनाया। कंपनी के साहित्य प्रेम से अभिभूत होकर रवीन्द्र नाथ टैगोर, शरतचन्द्र,बंकिमचन्द्र, आगा हश्र कश्मीरी जैसे नामचीनरचनाकार आकर्षित हुए |
शरत चंद्र का पात्र ‘देवदास’ बरुआ एवं सहगल की अभिनय क्षमता की मिसाल बन गया, इसकी गूंज बाद की कामयाब फिल्मो प्रेसीडेंट (1937),स्ट्रीट सिंगर(1938) जिंदगी (1940) में नज़र आई । बडे स्टार हो चुके सहगल अब कलकत्ता के साथ फिल्म निर्माण के अन्य बडे केंद्रों मे जाने का मन बनाया, चंदुलाल शाह (रंजीत स्टुडियो) के आमंत्रण पर बंबई चले आए । रंजीत स्टुडियो के बैनर तले ‘भक्त सूरदास’ और ‘तानसेन’ में शीर्षक अभिनय किया । पूरे जीवन में सहगल ने कुल 180 गाने गाए। प्रतिभा के धनी की आवाज में सात सुरों ‘सरगम’ की गहरी खनक मिलती है,इंद्रधनुष के सात रंगो की ब्यार को भावनाओं में व्यक्त किया। सपूर्णगायक के सभी गुण सहगल में मौजुद रहे,यही कारण है कि फ़ैय्याज खान,अबदुल करीम खान,बाल गंधर्व ,पंडित ओंकार नाथ जैसे संगीत सम्राट ‘सहगल’ से अभिभूत रहे ।उस्ताद फैय्याज खान ने एक बार सहगल से‘ख्याल’ को ‘राग दरबारी’ में गाने को कहा, जवाब में सहगल ने जब गा कर सुनाया तो फैय्याज खान यही कहा ‘ शिष्य ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं जो तुम्हें सीखना चाहिए’
सहगल के स्मरण में न्यु थियेटर्स (बी एन सरकार)ने ‘अमर सहगल’(1955) के माध्यम से उन्हें एक भावपूर्ण श्रधांजलि दी थी । फिल्म में जी मुंगेरी ने मुख्य भूमिका अदा की, उस समय के नितीन बोस (निर्देशक),रायचंद बोराल- सहायक: पंकज मल्लिक एवं तीमीर बोरन (संगीत) जैसी शीर्ष प्रतिभाओं की सेवाएं ली गई । साथ में सहगल की फिल्मों से लगभग 19 शीर्ष गीतों को रखा गया, जो कि एक भव्य आकर्षण था ।
