हाल के बरसों में नीलाभ की चर्चा अरुंधति रे से लेकर चिनुआ अचिबे के शानदार अनुवादक के रूप में रही है. लेकिन नीलाभ मूलतः एक गंभीर कवि और लेखक हैं. अभी हाल में ही उन्होंने महाभारत कथा को आम पाठकों के लिए तैयार किया है. ‘मायामहल’ और ‘धर्मयुद्ध’ के नाम से प्रकाशित दो खण्डों की इस महाभारत कथा में कथा के साथ-साथ उनका विश्लेषण भी चलता रहता है, जो बेहद महत्वपूर्ण है. प्रकाशक है हार्पर कॉलिंस. प्रस्तुत है पहले खंड ‘मायामहल’ की भूमिका.

इतने बरसों बाद अब यह तो याद नहीं है कि किस उमर में पहली बार महाभारत से मेरा परिचय हुआ था, लेकिन यह ज़रूर आभास है कि ज़िन्दगी में काफ़ी जल्दी ही – शायद नौ–दस साल का रहा हूंगा जब महाभारत ने मुझ पर अपना जादू कर दिया था. आम घरों के विपरीत – जहां महाभारत को घर में रखना अशुभ समझा जाता है, यह कहते हुए कि इससे घर में कलह मचती है (शायद इस मान्यता के पीछे महाभारत की कथा कहने वालों और राम–कथा वाचकों की कोई आपसी व्यावसायिक प्रतिद्वन्द्विता का मामला रहा हो), हमारे घर में महाभारत के एक नहीं, अनेक प्रारूप थे.
गीता प्रेस द्वारा “कल्याण” की दो जिल्दों में प्रकाशित“महाभारतांक” तो था ही, इण्डियन प्रेस से प्रकाशित बांग्ला से अनूदित महावीर प्रसाद द्विवेदी का“सचित्र महाभारत” भी था. एक और संक्षिप्त प्रारूप वह था जो कवि निराला ने प्रस्तुत किया था; और फिर छ्ह खण्डों में मूल संस्कृत के श्लोकों और उनके हिन्दी भावार्थों वाला विराट ग्रन्थ भी था. लेकिन मेरा पहला–पहला साबका “कल्याण” के“महाभारतांक” ही से हुआ. इसकी वजह शायद यह थी कि मेरा बचपन बहुत अकेला बीता और साथियों–संगियों की कमी मैंने किताबों से पूरी की और महाभारत तो किताबों की किताब ठहरी. उसकी कथाओं में मैं ऐसा खो जाता कि मुझे आस–पास के जगत का ध्यान भी न रहता.जाने कितनी बार मैं आरुणि की तरह पानी को रोकने के लिए मेड़ पर लेटा या उपमन्यु की तरह मदार के पत्ते खा कर कुएं में गिरा या उत्तंक की तरह गुरु–दक्षिणा के लिए राजा पौष्य की रानी के कुण्डल लाने गया.
दरअसल, महाभारत का शिल्प ही ऐसा है कि वह पाठक को बांध लेता है. बरगद या अश्वत्थ के किसी विराट वृक्ष की तरह उसका तना, यानी मूल कथा, तो कुरुक्षेत्र का युद्ध ही है, लेकिन मूल कथा रचने वाले व्यास के बाद उनकी गद्दी पर जो व्यास आये, उन्होंने इस वृक्ष की डालियों और टहनियों और पत्तों और जटाओं के रूप में सैकड़ों कथाएं उस मूल कथा में गूंथ दीं.
फिर जब कथा के पात्रों को जीने से बढ़ कर कथा को जांचने–परखने की उमर आयी तब भी महाभारत मेरे लिए कथाओं का ऐसा विराट सरोवर बना रहा जो मुझे समय–समय पर तरो–ताज़ा कर देता. कई बार पहले के पढ़े हुए प्रसंगों में नयी अर्थच्छटाएं दिखने लगतीं. मिसाल के लिए जब मैंने एक बार काफ़ी समय बाद जरत्कारु की कथा पढ़ी तो मेरा ध्यान उस रूपक की ओर गया जो रचनाकार ने इस कथा में बुन दिया है — अश्वत्थ के वृक्ष को मानव जाति, कुएं में लटक रही उसकी जड़ को परम्परा, जड़ को काट रहे चूहे को महाबली काल और कुएं को विस्मृति के रूप में चित्रित करते हुए. और तब इस प्रसंग की अन्तर्निहित बिम्ब–योजना, उसकी काव्यात्मकताharper collins mahabharat neelabh
