आज 21 जुलाई को अमेरिकी लेखक अर्नेस्ट हेमिंग्वे का जन्मदिन है. नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता इस अमेरिकी लेखक ने दुनिया भर की भाषाओं के लेखकों को प्रभावित किया. न कहकर कहने की उनकी शैली में कहानियों के रहस्य दो पंक्तियों के बीच छिपे होते थे जिसे आलोचकों ने हिडेन फैक्ट की तकनीक के नाम से जाना. अतिकथन के दौर में वह मितकथन का लेखक था. मानीखेज़ चुप्पियों के इस अप्रतिम लेखक की एक छोटी सी कहानी यहाँ प्रस्तुत है जिसमें उनकी यह तकनीक देखी-पहचानी जा सकती है.
अपने शयन कक्ष में मेज़ पर अखबार खोले बैठी वह खिडकी से बाहर बर्फबारी देख रही थी. बर्फ छत पर गिरती थी पिघल जाती थी. उसने बाहर देखना बंद किया और यह खत लिखने बैठ गई. आराम-आराम से जिससे न कुछ काटना पड़े न ही दोबारा लिखना पड़े.
