उसकी हँसी
उस पर झुमका चुराने का आरोप था
उसे उसके पति ने दाग कर
घर से निकाल दिया
वह कहाँ गई फिर कुछ पता नहीं चला
बहुत बाद में पता चला
झुमका चुराने का तो बहाना था
वह पकड़ी गई थी अपने किसी प्रिय के साथ
हँसते-बोलते। जब पति ने उसे देखा तो वह हँस-हँस कर दोना हुई जा रही थी
उसे होश ही नहीं था किसी और बात का
प्रिय उसका टिका नहीं
दिखा नहीं कहीं उधर फिर वह हँसती रही अगले दिन भी जब सेंक रही थी रोटियाँ
जब पाथ रही थी उपले
जब कूँट रही थी धान
जब कर रही थी विपरीत रति पति के साथ वह खिली सी रही तब भी जब पति घर में नहीं था
जब धो रही थी खुद को सम्हाल-सम्हाल कर
जैसे वह कच्चा घट हो
जिसे उसकी हँसी पका रही थी धीरे-धीरे
भोर में थोड़े से तारों के साथ
रात के झमाझम अंधेरे में
सांझ की तरलता में
करवट लेते हुए
उतान सूने आकाश को खंगालते हुए
हँस रही थी वह
कई-कई रंग में चमक रही थी वह। उसकी बरौनियाँ बिहंस रहीं थीं
उसकी अलकें खिलखिला रही थीं
उसके कपोल थिरक रहे थे
उसका यौवन लपट की तरह उग रहा था
उसका चूल्हा लहालोट हो रहा था
उसका आंगन मह-मह कर रहा था। दो एक दिन ही रही उसकी हंसी उसकी फिर एक दिन उसी की विदाई वाले संदूक से मिले दो झुमके
लड़ियों वाले झुमके
चम-चम कर हिलते कांपते सोने के झुमके
उसकी ही जेठानी के झुमके
उसकी पसंद के झुमके
आँखों में अटकते-खटकते झुमके। फिर दाग दी गई वह झुमका चुराने के आरोप में
जहाँ-जहाँ से फूटती थी हंसी
वहाँ-वहाँ पर थे लोहे के चिमटों से दागने के निशान छापे गए
वही रोटियों को सेकने वाला चिमटा
उसका अपना चिमटा। गाँव चुप था
गिराँव चुप था
रान्ह-पड़ोस स्तब्ध था
किलकारियाँ ध्वस्त थीं। वहाँ कोई न था जो उसे समझता
वहाँ किसी स्त्री को समझने की परम्परा नहीं थी
स्त्रियाँ धराऊ होती थीं
किसी एक के कोठार में बंद रहती थीं वे
उनका मन तक धराऊ होता था
किसी एक के लिए। पर वह तो फुहार की तरह थी
वह तो सुगंध की तरह थी
अनियंत्रित
लेकिन वहाँ किसी स्त्री का अनियंत्रित होना उसके न होने की निशानी माना जाता था। वह उन दागे गए निशानों के साथ
घर से बाहर निकाली गई
और उन निशानों के साथ वह खो गई
अपनी हंसी के साथ वह गई
कहाँ गई
फिर दिखी नहीं कभी। जब भी किसी स्त्री को हंसते देखता हूँ
हर खिलखिलाहट में उसको खोजता हूँ
नहीं मिलती वैसी पावन हँसी
वह खो गई जलाई हँसी
वह न भूलती दागी हँसी।

पर साहूकार के घर के लिए सुरक्षित धन
प्रेम रचाने के लिए उत्सुक मन नहीं
पर यहाँ तो देह का आकर्षण खड़ा था साक्षात
सभा को तो देव का आकर्षण भी मंजूर न था
क्योंकि सभा जानती है
कि प्रेम देह से हो, या देव से
मनुष्य से हो या ईश्वर से संशयों से घिरा रहता है
साधना तलाशता है
