पेरू से पेरिस में आकर मेरी और पॉल दोनों की जिंदगी बदल गई थी. वह अब भी मेरा सबसे अच्छा दोस्त था, लेकिन हमारा मिलना-जुलना कम हो गया था. कारण यह था कि मैंने यूनेस्को के लिए बतौर अनुवादक काम करना शुरु कर दिया था और मेरी जिम्मेदारियां बढ़ गई थीं. जबकि वह क्रान्तिकारी संगठन एमईआर से जुड़ गया था और वह उसके कारण दुनिया भर में घूमता रहता था. कभी शान्ति के लिए किसी मीटिंग में, कभी तीसरी दुनिया की मुक्ति के लिए बुलाई गई बैठक में, कभी आणविक शस्त्रों के खिलाफ, कभी उपनिवेशवाद और साम्राज्यवाद के खिलाफ और इसी तरह के हजारों तरह के अन्य प्रगतिशील मुद्दों को लेकर, प्रगतिशील जमात के साथ. वह हर जगह एमईआर के प्रतिनिधि के तौर पर मौजूद रहता. जब वह पेरिस में होता तो हम हफ्ते में दो या तीन बार मिलते- कभी कॉफी पीने के बहाने, कभी खाने पर. वह मुझे बताता कि वह अभी बीजिंग या कैरो, या हवाना, या प्योंग्योंग, या हनोई से लौटा था, जहाँ उसने लैटिन अमेरिका की क्रांति की दशा के बारे में करीब तीस देशों के ५० क्रांतिकारी संगठनों के करीब १५०० प्रतिनिधियों के सामने अपनी बात रखी- उस पेरुवियाई क्रांति के बारे में जो तब तक शुरु नहीं हुई थी.
अगर मैं उसके अंग-अंग से टपकती उस प्रतिबद्धता के बारे में ठीक से नहीं जानता होता तो तो मुझे लगता कि वह मुझे प्रभावित करने के लिए बढ़ा-चढ़ा कर बातें कर रहा है. यह कैसे संभव था कि पेरिस में रहने वाला यह दक्षिण अमेरिकी, जो कुछ महीने पहले तक एक मेक्सिकन होटल की रसोई में काम करता था, हवाई क्रांति का प्रतीक बन गया था, अलग-अलग महाद्वीपों की हवाई यात्राएं करने लगा और चीन, क्यूबा, विएतनाम, मिस्र, उत्तरी कोरिया, लीबिया, इंडोनेशिया के नेताओं के साथ कंधे टकराने लगा? लेकिन यह सच था. पॉल उन्हीं संबंधों, स्वार्थों और भ्रमों के अतिसूक्ष्म और विचित्र घालमेल का परिणाम था जिसने क्रांति को जन्म दिया था, और उसी ने उसे एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हस्ती बना दिया था.
पॉल के इस नए जीवन के कारण पेरिस में रहने वाले पेरुवियाई उसके बारे में तरह-तरह की बातें करते, जो अच्छी नहीं होती थीं. पेरिस में रहने वाले पेरू के उन देशबदर नागरिकों में कुछ लेखक थे जो अब लिखते नहीं थे, कुछ चित्रकार थे जो अब चित्र नहीं बनाते थे, संगीतकार थे जो अब न तो संगीत बनाते थे न बजाते थे, और कैफे में बैठे रहने वाले क्रांतिकारी थे जो यह कहकर अपनी ईर्ष्या, हताशा और बोरियत को मिटाते कि पॉल ‘क्रांति का अफसरशाह हो गया था.’
लेकिन गुइलेर्मो लोबाटन की तो बात ही कुछ और थी. पॉल के माध्यम से मैं पेरिस में जिन पेरुवियाई क्रांतिकारियों से मिला उनमें से कोई उतना होशियार, पढ़ा-लिखा और संकल्पशक्ति वाला नहीं था. वह अब भी नौजवान था, बमुश्किल ३० साल का, लेकिन क्रांति के मामले में उसका अतीत बड़ा समृद्ध था. १९५२ में जब सैन मार्कोस विश्विद्यालय में ओद्रिया की तानाशाही के खिलाफ बड़ी हड़ताल हुई थी तो वह उसका नायक था. परिणाम यह हुआ कि उसे गिरफ्तार किया गया और दूर के कस्बे फ्रोंटन भेज दिया गया, जहाँ राजनीतिक कैदियों को भेजा जाता था, यातनाएं दी गईं. और इस कारण उसे सैन मार्कोस विश्विद्यालय में दर्शन की पढ़ाई बीच में ही छोडनी पड़ी, जहाँ कहा जाता था कि अच्छे विद्यार्थी के तौर पर वह ली कैरिल्लो का प्रतिद्वंद्वी था, जो बाद में चलकर हाइडेगर का शिष्य बना. १९५४ में उसे सैनिक शासन ने देशनिकाला दे दिया, और अनेक मुश्किलों के बाद वह पेरिस पहुंचा, जहाँ वह मजदूरी करके अपना गुज़ारा करने लगा, और वहां उसने सोर्बोर्न विश्विद्यालय में दर्शन की पढ़ाई फिर से शुरु कर दी. फिर कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी की स्कोलरशिप पर वह पूर्वी जर्मनी के लिपजिग नामक शहर में पढ़ने चला गया, जहाँ वह पार्टी के कैडर्स के लिए चलने वाले एक स्कूल में दर्शन की पढ़ाई करने लगा. वहीं रहते हुए वह क्यूबा की क्रांति के प्रभाव में आया. क्यूबा में जो कुछ हुआ उसने उसे लैटिन अमेरिकी कम्युनिस्ट पार्टियों और स्टालिनवाद की हठधर्मिता का बहुत बड़ा आलोचक बना दिया. उससे व्यक्तिगत रूप से मिलने से पहले मैंने उसका एक लेख पढ़ा था जो पेरिस में पर्चे की शक्ल में बंट रहा था, जिसमें उसने कम्युनिस्ट पार्टियों पर यह आरोप लगाया था कि उन्होंने मॉस्को से मिलने वाले आदेशों के कारण अपने आपको जनता से काट लिया था. वे चे गुएवारा के इस कथन को भूल गए थे, ‘कि क्रांतिकारी का पहला कर्त्तव्य यह होता है कि वह क्रांति करे.’ अपने इस लेख में उसने फिदेल कास्त्रो और उसके कॉमरेडों तथा उनके क्रांतिकारी मॉडल का उदाहरण दिया था, उसने ट्रोट्स्की को उद्दृत किया था. इसी उद्धरण की वजह से उस पर अनुशासनात्मक कारवाई हुई और उसे पूर्वी जर्मनी तथा पेरुवियाई कम्युनिस्ट पार्टी दोनों से निकाल दिया गया.
जिसके बाद वह वापस पेरिस आया, जहाँ उसने जैकलीन नामक एक फ्रेंच लड़की से शादी की, जो खुद भी क्रांतिकारी थी. पेरिस में उसकी मुलाकात अपने पुराने दोस्त पॉल से हुई और उसी के माध्यम से वह एमईआर से जुड़ा. उसने क्यूबा में गुरिल्ला युद्ध का प्रशिक्षण लिया और उस घड़ी की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा जब पेरू लौटकर वह अपने इस कौशल को व्यावहारिक रूप दे सके. जब क्यूबा ने पिग्स की खड़ी पर आक्रमण किया तो मैंने उसे हर कहीं देखा, क्यूबा के साथ एकजुटता दिखाने के लिए होने वाले सभी प्रदर्शनों में, उनमें से कई में बोलते हुए, बहुत बढ़िया फ्रेंच में ज़बरदस्त वाक्पटुता के साथ धाराप्रवाह.

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
