जो मार्क्स के मानव हृदय को जानता चाहते है, उस हृदय को जो विद्वत्ता के बाहरी आचरण के भीतर भी इतना स्निग्ध था, उन्हें मार्क्स को उस समय देखना चाहिये जब उनकी पुस्तकें और लेख अलग रख दिये जाते थे, जब वह अपने परिवार के साथ होते थे और जब वह रविवार की शाम को अपनी मित्र मंडली में रहते थे। ऐसे समय में वह बड़े अच्छे साथी साबित होते थे। हँसी मजाक तो जैसे उमड़ा पड़ता था। उनकी हँसी दिखावटी नहीं होती थी। कोई मौके का जवाब या चुटीला वाक्य सुनकर घनी भौहों वाली उनकी काली आँखें खुशी से चमकने लगती थीं।
वह बड़े स्नेहपूर्ण, दयालु और उदार पिता थे। वह बहुधा कहते थे कि ”माँ-बाप को अपने बच्चों से शिक्षा लेनी चाहिये”। उनकी लड़कियाँ उनसे बड़ा स्नेह करती थी और उनके आपस के संबंध में पैतृक शासन लेशमात्र भी नहीं था। वह उन्हें कभी कुछ करने की आज्ञा नहीं देते थे। केवल उनसे अपने लिये कोई काम करने का अनुरोध करते या जो उन्हें नापसन्द होता वह न करने की उनसे प्रार्थना करते। परन्तु फिर भी शायद ही कभी किसी पिता की सलाह उनसे अधिक मानी गयी होगी। उनकी लड़कियाँ उन्हें अपना मित्र समझती थीं और उनके साथ अपने साथी के समान बर्ताव करती थी। वह उन्हें पिताजी नहीं बल्कि ‘मूर‘ कहती थीं। उनके साँवले रंग, काले बाल और काली दाढ़ी के कारण उन्हें यह उपनाम दिया गया था। परन्तु‘ इसके विपरीत सन 1848 तक में, जब वह तीस बरस के भी नहीं थे, कम्युनिस्ट लीग के अपने साथी सदस्यों के लिये वह ‘बाबा मार्क्स‘ थे।
अपने बच्चों के साथ खोलते हुए वह घंटों बिता देते थे। बच्चों को अभी तक वह समुद्री लड़ाइयाँ और कागजी नावों के उस पूरे बेड़े का जलाना याद है जिसे मार्क्स बच्चों के लिए बनाते थे और पानी की बाल्टी में छोड़कर उसमें आग लगा देते थे। इतवार को लड़कियाँ उन्हें काम नहीं करने देती थीं। उस रोज वह दिन भर के लिये बच्चों के हो जाते थे। जब मौसम अच्छा होता था तो पूरा कुटुम्ब। देहात की ओर घूमने जाता था। रास्ते के किसी होटल में रुककर पनीर, रोटी और जिंजर बीअर का साधारण भोजन होता। जब बच्चे बहुत छोटे थे तो वह रास्ते भर उन्हें कहानियाँ सुनाते रहते जिससे वे थकें नहीं। वह उन्हें कभी न खत्म होने वाली कल्पनापूर्ण परियों की कहानियाँ सुनाते थे, जिन्हें वह चलते-चलते गढ़ते जाते थे। और रास्ते की लम्बाई के अनुसार उन्हें घटाते-बढ़ाते रहते थे ताकि सुनने वाले अपनी थकान भूल जायें। मार्क्स की कल्पना शक्ति बड़ी समृद्ध और काव्यपपूर्ण थी और अपने प्रथम साहित्यिक प्रयास में उन्होंने कविताएँ लिखी थीं। उनकी स्त्री इन युवावस्था की कविताओं का बड़ा आदर करती थीं परन्तु किसी को देखने नहीं देती थीं। मार्क्स के माँ-बाप अपने लड़के को साहित्यिक या विश्वदविद्यालय का अध्यापक बनाना चाहते थे। उनके विचार से अपने को साम्यवादी आन्दोलन में लगाकर और अर्थशास्त्र के अध्ययन में लगकर (इस विषय का उस समय जर्मनी में बहुत कम आदर किया जाता था) मार्क्स अपने को नीचा कर रहे थे।
मार्क्स ने एक बार अपनी लड़कियों से ग्राची के बारे में नाटक लिखने का वादा किया था। दुर्भाग्यवश यह इरादा कभी पूरा नहीं हुआ। यह देखना बड़ा मनोरंजक होता कि ‘वर्ग-संघर्ष का योद्धा‘ (मार्क्स को यही कहा जाता था) प्राचीन संसार के वर्ग-संघर्षों की इस भयानक और उज्ज्वल घटना को कैसे दिखाता। यह अनेक योजनाओं में से केवल एक थी जो कभी पूरी नहीं हो सकी। उदाहरणार्थ वह तर्कशास्त्र पर एक पुस्तक लिखना चाहते थे और एक दर्शनशास्त्र के इतिहास पर। दर्शन युवाकाल में उनके अध्ययन का प्रिय विषय था। अपनी योजना की हुई सब किताबों को लिखने का अवसर पाने और संसार को अपने दिमाग में भरे हुए खजाने का एक अंश दिखाने के लिये उन्हें कम से कम सौ बरस तक जीने की जरूरत होती।
उनके जीवन भर उनकी स्त्री उनकी सच्ची और वास्तविक साथी रही। वे एक दूसरे को बचपन से जानते थे और साथ-साथ बड़े हुए थे। जब उनकी सगाई हुई तो मार्क्स केवल सत्रह बरस के थे। सन 1843 में उनकी शादी हुई। किन्तु उसके पहले उन्हें नौ बरस तक इंतजार करना पड़ा था। पर उसके बाद श्रीमती मार्क्स के देहान्त तक-जो उनके पति से कुछ ही समय पहले हुआ- वे कभी अलग नहीं हुए। यद्यपि उनका जन्म और पालन पोषण एक अमीर जर्मन घराने में हुआ था, तो भी उनकी सी समता की प्रबल भावना होना कठिन है। उनके लिये सामाजिक अंतर और विभाजन थे ही नहीं। उनके घर में खाने के लिये अपने काम के कपड़े पहने हुए एक मजदूर का उतनी ही नम्रता और आदर से स्वागत होता था जितना किसी राजकुमार या नवाब का होता। अनेक देश के मजूदरों ने उनके आतिथ्य का सुख पाया। मुझे विश्वास है कि जिनका उन्होंने इतनी सादगी और सच्ची उदारता से सत्कार किया उनमें से किसी ने सपने में भी नहीं सोचा होगा कि उनका सत्कार करने वाले की ननसाल आरगाइल के ड्यूकों के वंश में थी और उसका भाई प्रशा के राजा का राजमंत्री रह चुका था। किंतु इन सब चीजों का श्रीमती मार्क्स के लिये कोई महत्व भी नहीं था। अपने कार्ल का अनुसरण करने के लिये उन्होंने इन सब चीजों को छोड़ दिया था और उन्होंने अपने किये पर कभी पछतावा नहीं किया, अपनी दरिद्रता के सबसे बुरे दिनों में भी नहीं।
उनका स्वभाव धैर्यवान और हंसमुख था। मित्रों को लिखे हुए उनके पत्र उनकी सरल लेखनी के अकृत्रिम उद्गारों में भरे होते थे और उनमें एक मौलिक और सजीव व्यक्तित्व की झाँकी मिलती है। जिस दिन उनका पत्र आता था उस दिन उनके मित्र खुशी मनाते थे। जोहान फिलिप बेकर ने उनमें से बहुतों को छापा है। निष्ठुतर व्यंग्य लेखक, हाइने मार्क्स की खिल्ली उड़ाने की आदत से डरता था। परन्तु श्रीमती मार्क्स की पैनी बुद्धि की वह बड़ी तारीफ करता था। जब मार्क्स दम्पत्ति पैरिस में ठहरे तो वह बहुत बार उनके यहाँ आता। मार्क्स अपनी स्त्री की बुद्धि व आलोचना-शक्ति का इतना आदर करते थे कि (जैसा उन्होंने मुझे सन 1866 में बताया) अपने सब लेखों को वह उन्हें दिखाते थे और उनके विचारों को बहुमूल्यु समझते थे। छापेखाने में जाने से पहले वही उनके लेखों की नकल कर दिया करती थीं।
श्रीमती मार्क्स के बहुत से बच्चे हुए। उनके तीन बच्चे उनकी दरिद्रता के उस जमाने में बचपन में ही मर गये जिसका उनके कुटुम्बो को सन 1848 की क्रांति के बाद सामना करना पड़ा। उस समय वे भागकर लंदन में सोहो स्क्वेयर की डीन स्ट्रीट पर दो कमरों में रहते थे। मेरी उनकी केवल तीन लड़कियों से जान-पहचान हुई। सन 1868 में जब मार्क्स से मेरा परिचय हुआ तो उनमें से सबसे छोटी, जो अब श्रीमती एवलिंग हैं, बड़ी प्यारी बच्ची थी और लड़की से ज्यादा लड़का मालूम होती थी। मार्क्स बहुधा हँसी में कहा करते थे कि इलीनोर को दुनिया को भेंट करते समय उनकी स्त्री ने उसके लिंग के बारे में गलती कर दी है। बाकी दोनों लड़कियाँ एक दूसरे से भिन्न होते हुए भी बड़ी सुन्दर और आकर्षक थीं। उनमें से बड़ी, जो अब श्रीमती लौंगुए हैं, अपने बाप की तरह गहरे रंग की थी औ उसकी आँखें और बाल काले थे। छोटी, जो अब श्रीमती लाफार्ज हैं, अपनी मां के ऊपर थी। उसका रंग गोरा और गाल गुलाबी थे और सिर पर घुंघराले बालों की घनी लट थी जिसकी सुनहरी चमक से मालूम होता था कि उसमें डूबता सूरज छिपा हो।
इसके अलावा मार्क्स-परिवार में एक और महत्वपूर्ण प्राणी था जिसका नाम हेलेन डेमुथ था। वह किसान परिवार में जन्मी थी और काफी छोटी उम्र में ही, जेनी फौन वेस्ट फेलन की कार्ल मार्क्स के साथ शादी होने के बहुत पहले ही, वह वेस्टीफेलन परिवार में नौकर हो गयी थी। जब जेनी की शादी हुई तो हेलेन उसने मार्क्स परिवार के भाग्य का अनुसरण किया। यूरोप-भर में यात्राओं में वह मार्क्स और उनकी स्त्री के साथ गयी और उनके सब देशनिकालों में उनके साथ रही। वह घर की कार्यशीलता की मूर्तिमान भावना थी और यह जानती थी कि मुश्किल से मुश्किल हालत में किस तरह काम चलाना चाहिये। उसकी किफायत, सफाई और चतुराई के ही कारण परिवार को दरिद्रता की सबसे बुरी दशा नहीं भोगनी पड़ी। वह घरेलू कामों में निपुण थी। वह रसोई बनाने वाली और नौकरानी का काम करती थी, बच्चों को कपड़े पहनाती थी, बच्चों के लिये कपड़े काटती थी और श्रीमती मार्क्स की मदद से उन्हें सीती भी थी। वह घर चलाती थी और साथ ही साथ मुख्य नौकरानी भी थी। बच्चे उसे अपनी माँ के समान प्यार करते थे। वह भी उसी तरह उन्हें प्यार करती थी और उनपर उसका माँ जैसा ही असर था। मार्क्स तथा उनकी स्त्री दोनों उसे एक प्रिय मित्र मानते थे। मार्क्स उसके साथ शतरंज खेला करते थे और बहुत बार हार जाते थे। मार्क्स-परिवार के लिये हेलेन का प्रेम आलोचनात्मक नहीं था। जो कोई मार्क्स की बुराई करता उसकी हेलेन के हाथों खैर न थी। जिसका भी कुटुम्ब से घना संबंध हो जाता था उसकी वह माँ की तरह देखभाल करने लगती थी। यह कहना चाहिये कि उसने पूरे परिवार को गोद ले लिया था। मार्क्स और उनकी स्त्री के बाद जीवित रहकर अब उसने अपना ध्यान और देखभाल एंगेल्स के ऊपर लगा दी है। उसका युवावस्थाग में एंगेल्स से परिचय हुआ था और उनसे भी वह उतना ही स्नेह करती थी। जितना मार्क्स के परिवार से।
इसके अलावा यह कहना चाहिये कि एंगेल्स भी मार्क्स के कुनबे का ही एक आदमी था। मार्क्स की लड़कियाँ उन्हें अपना दूसरा पिता कहती थीं। वह और मार्क्स एक प्राण दो काया के समान थे। जर्मनी में बरसों तक उनका नाम साथ-साथ लिया जाता था और इतिहास के पन्नों में उनका सदा साथ-साथ लिखा जायगा। मार्क्स और एंगेल्स ने प्राचीन काल के लेखकों द्वारा चित्रित मित्रता के आदर्श को आधुनिक युग में पूरा कर दिखाया। उनकी युवावस्थाथ में भेंट हुई, उनका साथ ही साथ विकास हुआ, उनके विचारों और भावों में सदैव बड़ी घनिष्ठता रही, दोनों ने एक ही क्रांतिकारी आंदोलन में भाग लिया और जब तक वे साथ रह सके दोनों साथ-साथ काम करते रहे। यदि परिस्थिति ने उन्हें अलग न कर दिया होता तो संभवत: वे जीवन भर साथ रहते।
सन 1848 की क्रांति के दमन के बाद एंगेल्स को मेंचेस्टर जाना पड़ा और मार्क्स को लंदन में रहना पड़ा। फिर भी चिट्ठी-पत्री द्वारा अपने बौद्धिक जीवन की घनिष्ठटता उन्होंने बनाये रखी। लगभग हर रोज वे एक दूसरे को राजनीतिक और वैज्ञानिक घटनाओं, और जिस काम में वे लगे थे उसके बारे में लिखते रहते थे। जैसे ही एंगेल्स को मेंचेस्टर से अपने काम से फुरसत मिली उन्होंने लंदन में अपने प्रिय मार्क्स से केवल दस मिनिट के रास्ते की दूरी पर अपना घर बनाया। सन 1870 से सन 1883 में मार्क्स की मृत्यु तक मुश्किल से कोई दिन ऐसा बीतता होगा जब वे दोनों घरों में से एक घर में आपस में न मिलते हों।
जब कभी एंगेल्स मेंचेस्टर से आने का इरादा प्रकट करते थे, तो मार्क्स के परिवार में बड़ी खुशी मनायी जाती थी। बहुत दिन पहले ही उनके आने के बारे में बातचीत होने लगती थी। और आने के दिन तो मार्क्स इतने अधीर हो जाते थे कि वह काम नहीं कर सकते थे। अंत में भेंट का समय आता था और दोनों मित्र सिगरेट और शराब पीते और पिछली भेंट के बाद जो कुछ हुआ उसकी बातें करते हुए सारी रात बिता देते थे।
एंगेल्स की राय को मार्क्स और सब की सम्मति से ज्यादा मानते थे। एंगेल्स को वह अपने सहयोगी होने के योग्यब समझते थे। सच तो यह है कि एंगेल्स उनके लिये पूरी पाठक-मंडली के बराबर थे। एंगेल्स को समझाने के लिये या किसी विषय पर उनकी राय बदलने के लिये मार्क्स किसी भी परिश्रम को अधिक नहीं समझते थे। उदाहरणार्थ, मुझे मालूम है कि एल्बिजेन्सिज की राजनीतिक और धार्मिक लड़ाई के बारे में किसी साधारण बात पर (मुझे अब याद नहीं आता कि वह क्या बात थी) एंगेल्स़ का विचार बदलने के उद्देश्यी से तथ्य ढूंढ़ने के लिये उन्हों ने कई बार पूरी पुस्तकें पढ़ीं। एंगेल्सक का मत परिवर्तन कर लेना उनके लिये एक बड़ी विजय होती थी।
मार्क्स को एंगेल्स पर गर्व था। उन्होंने बड़ी खुशी के साथ मुझे अपने मित्र के नैतिक व बौद्धिक गुण गिनाये और, केवल उनसे मेरी भेंट कराने के लिये, उन्हों ने मेंचेस्टर तक यात्रा की। वह एंगेल्सर के ज्ञान की बहुमुखता की बड़ी तारीफ करते थे और उन्हें इसकी चिंता रहती थी कि कहीं उनके साथ कोई दुर्घटना न हो जाय। मुझसे मार्क्स ने कहा कि मुझे हमेशा डर लगा रहता है कि खेतों में से पागलों की तरह तेज घोड़ा दौड़ाने में वह कहीं गिर न जाये।
मार्क्स जैसे स्नेही पति व पिता थे वैसे ही अच्छे मित्र भी थे। उनकी स्त्री, उनकी लड़कियाँ, हेलेन डेमुथ और फ्रेडरिक एंगेल्स उन जैसे आदमी के स्नेह के योग्य थे।
