स्वर और व्यंजन

भंते,

अभी पूछना बहुत कुछ था 

पर अचानक सोच में पड़ गया हूँ 

इस सोच का क्या करूँ 

कि यह जो मेरी हिन्दी है 

जिसे मेरी जिह्वा प्यार करती है 

असल में यह आपकी पाली ही है 

जिसे मेरे पुरखों ने बोलते-बोलते 

बना दिया है हिन्दी – 

जिसका मैं एक अदना-सा कवि हूँ 

इस महान देश का 

एक अदना-सा नागरिक 

इस नयी सदी की चकाचौंध में 

हैरान-परेशान कि जब मेरे बच्चे 

पहुंचेंगे अगली सदी के 

अगले मोड़ तक 

तो इसके स्वर 

क्या इसी तरह सटे रहेंगे 

इसके व्यंजन से 

और घास कहने पर दुनिया 

घास ही समझेगी 

कोई हत्यारा नहीं ?

 

 

Vowels and Consonants

 

O lord Buddha !

I was yet to ask you 

so many questions

but all of a sudden 

I am lost in a thought

and I have no clue

how to deal with this thought

that my language known as Hindi

which my tongue loves deeply

is nothing but your Pali actually

that has been turned into Hindi

by my ancestors who spoke it continually,

of which I am an ordinary poet,

an ordinary citizen of this august country,

who is distressed and distraught,

in the glitz and glitter of this new century,

wondering – when the posterity will reach

the next turn of the next century,

will the vowels of this language

be glued to its consonants in the same manner ?

and when someone will utter 

one of its words carrying the meaning of grass

will the people get it as grass, not as a murderer ?

कहना चाहता था 

बहुत पहले 

पर अब जबकि कलम मेरे हाथ में है 

कह दूँ – 

जो लिखकर फाड़ दी जाती हैं 

कालजयी होती हैं 

वही कविताएँ 

 

Timeless

 

I wanted to say

eons earlier

But now 

when the pen is in my hands

let me say –

only those poems are timeless

which are torn off

after being penned.

दिल्ली हो कि पनामा 

अपना ठाट यही है 

कुर्ता और पजामा। 

 

अपनी तो यह होली 

हिन्दी में घुल जाए 

टुक भोजपुरिया बोली 

 

जलती दुपहरिया में 

एक बांस की पत्ती 

चीख रही दुनिया में। 

 

हम हैं तुम हो वे हैं 

सब की छूट गई बस 

सब चुपचाप खड़े हैं। 

 

युग ही है कुछ ऐसा 

हर पैदल लगता है 

देवदूत के जैसा ।

 

The luxury I bask in

 

Be it Delhi or Panama

the luxury I bask in

is Kurta and Pajama.

 

Holi* takes place for me 

when Hindi is imbued

with a tinge of Bhojpuri**. 

 

In a sizzling afternoon 

a bamboo leaf on earth

is  crying  out  alone.

 

We,  they  and  you

Having all missed the bus

are quiet without clue.

 

This era is such a one

an angel emanates

from every pedestrian.

वसीयतनामा 

मेरी खाल दे दी जाए 

किसी खेत को 

कविताएँ कर दी जाएँ प्रवाहित 

किसी नाले में 

कौओं को दे दिया जाए निमंत्रण 

कि आवें और छज्जे पर बैठकर 

काँव-काँव करें 

मेरा कुर्ता किसी पेड़ को दे दिया जाए  

कमीज़ किसी झाड़ी को 

मेरी चिट्ठियाँ भेज दी जाएँ 

किसी और पते पर 

किसी और का नाम लिख दिया जाए 

मेरे नाम की जगह 

मेरा बिस्तर दे दिया जाए 

किसी बेबिस्तर पड़ोसी को 

 

जो कहता हूँ 

सो मैं कहता हूँ 

पर जो नहीं कहता 

वह पत्थरों को दे दिया जाए 

कि शायद . . .  शायद . . . 

कुछ बोलें।  

 

Testament

 

My skin may be given away

to a cropland 

My poems be flowed 

into a drainage channel

Crows may be invited

to come over and caw on the parapet

My kurta may be handed to a tree

and my shirt to a bush 

My letters may be dispatched

to some other address

and the name of someone else

be written in place of mine

My bed may be given

to a neighbor who has no bed

 

I say what I say

but what I don’t say

may be given to the stones

so that by any chance … perchance …

they might utter something.

गड़ेरिया 

 

सूर्यास्त से पहले 

वह रोज़ अपनी भेड़ों की गिनती करता था 

यह एक टोटका जैसा कुछ था

भेड़ों के देवता को खुश करने के लिए 

उसका विश्वास था 

जब सबके देवता हैं 

तो इन भेड़ों का भी देवता 

ज़रूर कोई होगा 

उसने एक बार झुककर 

सूरज की ओर देखा 

और शुरू कर दी गिनती . . . 

एक 

दो – 

पाँच . . सात . . 

कि यहाँ पहुँचकर 

ठिठक गया वह

वह उतनी-सी जगह 

रेवड़ में खाली थी  

उर्र . . उर्र . . 

उसने भेड़ों की भाषा में आवाज़ दी 

वहाँ एक भेड़ एक छौने को 

जन्म दे रही थी 

रक्त में लिथड़ा वह आधा गर्भ में था 

आधा पृथ्वी पर 

और भेड़ 

एक अश्रव्य कराह 

और अथाह रोमांच के बीच 

उसे देख रही थी 

एक बबूल के नीचे 

एक नये बोधिसत्व का 

जन्म हो रहा था। 

 

Shepherd

 

He used to count his sheep

every day before sunset

It was something like a ritual 

to please the god of the sheep

He believed 

if everyone had a god

there must be 

a god of the sheep as well

One day he looked at the sun

bending down his body

and started counting ….

one

two –

five… seven …

at which point he stuttered

as that very slot 

was vacant in the sheepfold

He called out – baa…. baa….

like the bleat of the sheep

and he saw 

an ewe was giving birth 

to a lambkin on one side

Soaked in blood

the lamb was partly in the womb

partly on earth

and the ewe was staring at it

amid an inaudible moaning

and immeasurable excitement 

A new Bodhisattva*

was being born 

under an acacia tree.

*According to Buddhism, Bodhisattva is a person who works to attain awakening (Bodhi) like that of Lord Buddha and is driven by great compassion, love, kindness, empathy, joy and equanimity. Lord Buddha is believed to have had attained awakening under the Bodhi tree (Peepal or Ficus religiosa) which is considered sacred. On the other hand, Acasia (Babool in Hindi and in many other languages of the Indian subcontinent) mentioned by the poet is a thorny tree which has no religious or sacred value attached to it, thus putting forth a poetic contrast.

कितने बरस लगते हैं

मैंने तेज़ धूप में 

ताज़ा कटे हुए गन्ने की जड़ से 

एक गाढ़े स्वाद को 

टपकते हुए देखा है 

देखी हैं ट्रकों की क़तारें 

अपनी पारी के इंतज़ार में 

मिल के धुएं की ओर 

एकटक ताकती हुईं 

 

मैंने देखे हैं रस के कड़ाह 

और उनमें तैरती हुई 

बच्चों की 

बूढ़ों की आँखें 

मैंने इतनी बार देखा है 

और इतने पास से 

कि रस की आँच पर 

थोड़ा-थोड़ा सींझा हूँ 

खौला हूँ मैं भी 

 

हर बार सींझकर 

घर लौटते हुए 

सारे श्वास-तंत्र की ताक़त बटोरकर 

मैंने बारहा पूछा है 

और क्षमा करें भद्रजन 

यदि फिर पूछ रहा हूँ 

मेरे देश की एक गाड़ी को 

कितना समय लगता है 

मिल के आखिरी काँटे तक पहुँचने में 

 

मेरे देश के एक हाथ को 

एक खुले हुए भूखे मुँह तक पहुँचने में 

कितने बरस लगते हैं ?

  How many years does it take

 

I have seen in the scorching sun

a thick flavour 

dripping from the root of the freshly cut sugarcane

I have seen a cavalcade of trucks

waiting for their turn

gazing steadily towards the smoke 

billowing from the sugar mill

 

I have seen the large pans of cane syrup

and the eyes of the kids and the elderly

sailing in those pans

So many times I have seen this

and from so close  

that I have also been simmered and boiled

by the heat of the syrup

 

Every time after a simmer

while coming back home

I have asked again and again 

gathering the stamina of the entire respiratory system

and I beg your pardon, ladies and gentlemen

if I am asking yet again –

how much time does it take

for a vehicle of my country

to reach the last weighing scale of the sugar mill ?

 

How many years does it take

for a hand of my country

to reach a gaping hungry mouth ?

सज्जनता 

यह जीवन 

खोई हुई चीज़ों का 

एक अथाह संग्रहालय है 

जिसका दरवाज़ा खोलते 

मुझे डर लगता है 

 

मुझे साँप से 

डर नहीं लगता 

अँधेरे से डर नहीं लगता 

काँटों से 

बुझती लालटेन से 

डर नहीं लगता 

पर सज्जनो ,

मुझे क्षमा करना 

मुझे सज्जनता से डर लगता है !

 

Gentlemanliness

 

This life 

is a monstrous museum

of the lost stuff

and I shudder 

at the thought of

opening its door.

 

I am not terrified of snakes,

nor do I dread the darkness.

I am not scared of thorns,

nor do I fear

the blowing out of the lantern.

But, gentlemen,

I beg your forgiveness,

what I fear 

is nothing but gentlemanliness !

बिना इजाज़त इस धरती –

इस महादेश की 

रोटी खाते

पानी पीते

 

चलते-चलते

दूर-दूर तक देख रहा हूँ

रोटी महँगी

पानी दुर्लभ

महादेश की सारी नदियाँ

सूखेपन से भरीं लबालब

 

सोच रहा हूँ –

चाहूँ तो क्या बन जाऊंगा

किसी की रोटी

किसी का पानी !

फिर इस जीने के क्या मानी ?

दिन ये ज्यों

छिलकों से छूटा

अंगारों पर भुनता भुट्टा !‘

how many days have passed 

while eating the bread 

and drinking the water

that belong to this earth 

and this country forever

for which I have no approval

 

On reaching this junction

after walking marathon

on the grand highway 

of the grand nation

I can see far 

in the range of vision –

bread is dear

water is rare

and all the rivers 

of the grand nation

overflow with parchedness aglare

 

I wonder – if I desire

can I become

someone’s bread

someone’s water ?

then what is this life meant for ?

 

My days are

like corn on the cob

being roasted

on burning charcoal !
